Course details
Course UCAS code: FF35
Qualification type:
  • BSc (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
This combination of subjects gives you a grounding in the fundamentals of physics and explores the workings of the universe, from our solar system to distant galaxies. You'll spend time in our astronomy laboratory, using our robotic telescope to generate your own data. You'll learn how to analyse data, and how to present your results. Physics at Sheffield gives you hands-on experience working with leading academics on real research projects. And there are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits. The three-year BSc focuses on the basic knowledge and skills every physicist needs. If you're interested in a research career, you might want to consider the four-year MPhys, which includes more research experience and the chance to study some topics in greater depth. Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.

"You aight, duck?" It’s a sort of mantra in Sheffield. An assortment of dubious endearing terms, generously drenched in Henderson’s Relish, served with a side of lowkey whining about The Arctic Monkeys. Before you know it you’ve caught the duck bug, whether you’re relaxing in one of the pubs on West Street or enjoying one of the massive nights out at the Union. Everything is within walking distance, but uphill – eventually you develop Viking legs and stop getting muscle soreness. The Peak District itself is part of town – ride the paternoster to the top of the Arts Tower and see for yourself. Aye duck, it’s reyt good.
