Sheffield offers an unusual amount of flexibility: at the end of the first year, you can choose to transfer to any other course in the department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Many students appreciate this option as their interests develop in a particular direction.
Stick with this course and you'll get a good grounding in molecular biosciences plus advanced modules on medically-relevant topics.
You can graduate after three years with a BSc or take an optional fourth year which leads to an MBiolSci degree, accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. The MBiolSci includes training in lab skills and an extensive research project which could be based in the department or in industry.
Microbiologists play an important role in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food safety, and forensic science. Our graduates work in all those fields. They also go into education, the civil service and research. Sheffield is rated number one in the UK for medically related research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.

"You aight, duck?" It’s a sort of mantra in Sheffield. An assortment of dubious endearing terms, generously drenched in Henderson’s Relish, served with a side of lowkey whining about The Arctic Monkeys. Before you know it you’ve caught the duck bug, whether you’re relaxing in one of the pubs on West Street or enjoying one of the massive nights out at the Union. Everything is within walking distance, but uphill – eventually you develop Viking legs and stop getting muscle soreness. The Peak District itself is part of town – ride the paternoster to the top of the Arts Tower and see for yourself. Aye duck, it’s reyt good.
