Course details
Course UCAS code: B621
Qualification type:
  • BMedSc (H), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
BMedSci Speech and Language Therapy is a three year course and is recognised as a qualification to practise as a speech and language therapist*. This interdisciplinary degree includes teaching from academic departments across the University, for example Biomedical Sciences and other health professionals such as neurologists and audiologists. Many children and adults have difficulties with communication. Speech and language therapists work with these individuals to help them to communicate. Speech and language therapists usually work with the individual as well as their families and carers. This can take place in the individual's home or in a clinic or hospital. Speech and language therapists who work with children usually do so in the children's school or nursery in collaboration with teachers and other professionals. There are many different types of communication problems. Some of these are well known, for example stammering, hearing loss and autism. Others are less well known, such as cleft palate, head injury and losing the ability to communicate after a stroke. Communication problems are complex. The role of the speech and language therapist is to identify the type of communication problem and then how to help the individual to communicate more effectively. To do this, speech and language therapists study a range of subjects including biomedical sciences, psychology, linguistics and communication. They also need to develop clinical skills to enable them to work with individuals with communication problems. The programme is awaiting approval from The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and its curriculum is informed by the QAA benchmarks for speech and language therapy, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) curriculum guidelines and subsequent Health & Care Professions Council Standards of proficiency and standards of education and training for speech and language therapists. The HCPC** and the RCSLT approve and accredit the programme. *Successful completion of the BMedSci programme provides eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). It is a legal requirement that anyone that wishes to practice using a title protected by the Health and Social Work Professions Order 2001 is on the HCPC register. For more information please see the HCPC. **The BMedSci (Speech and Language Therapy) is a new three year programme and is currently pending HCPC approval. This change is happening in response to Health Education England no longer funding students wishing to practise as Speech and Language Therapists.

"You aight, duck?" It’s a sort of mantra in Sheffield. An assortment of dubious endearing terms, generously drenched in Henderson’s Relish, served with a side of lowkey whining about The Arctic Monkeys. Before you know it you’ve caught the duck bug, whether you’re relaxing in one of the pubs on West Street or enjoying one of the massive nights out at the Union. Everything is within walking distance, but uphill – eventually you develop Viking legs and stop getting muscle soreness. The Peak District itself is part of town – ride the paternoster to the top of the Arts Tower and see for yourself. Aye duck, it’s reyt good.
