Course Summary:
If you don't have the right qualifications to start our BSc (Hons) Human Biology degree or if you want to gain more confidence in higher level work, you could opt to start your studies with a foundation year. You'll start by completing a foundation year, which provides well structured support, allowing you to develop your scientific skills and knowledge. Human biology is a vibrant, interdisciplinary field that focuses on the biology of human populations. Human biologists study diverse topics such as human health and disease, human evolution, variation and adaptability, genetics, and human ecology. On this Human Biology degree, accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, you'll learn about the relationships between molecular, anatomical, physiological and anthropological aspects of human biology, with a focus on biomedical aspects of human processes, such as how we respond to infection and how drugs act on the body. This course places significant emphasis on laboratory techniques, handling data, solving problems, writing reports and oral presentations. These elements enable you to understand scientific methods and critically evaluate scientific data, which are essential skills for a wide range of scientific careers. There is strong emphasis on practical learning and all students undertake an extensive project in their final year. A wide range of projects is available, from molecular parasitology to forensic anthropology, microbiology, and genetics. USW's Human Biology degree provides the scientific basis for a career in a range of fields, including biomedical research, teaching, and biotechnology industries. Recent graduates of this course are working in pharmacology, quality assurance, biochemistry laboratories or completing their postgraduate teacher training. Our emphasis on applied biological knowledge is also ideal if you want to progress to postgraduate study, with many graduates undertaking further study in biotechnology, anthropology, and other life sciences. Our Biology degrees are based in our Glyntaff campus. USW Glyntaff is surrounded by green open spaces. Our students say they love the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views. Home to our health, nursing, police, sport and science students, Glyntaff has state-of-the-art facilities including the latest science laboratories. You will also find a library, two cafes and a free regular shuttle bus to USW Treforest.

I was on the Cardiff campus, and it’s such a lovely city. There’s loads of great clubs, like Clwb Ifor Bach (That’s ‘The Welsh Club) holds loads of different nights, or Full Moon across the road if you fancy seeing some great local bands. There’s also the world’s oldest record shop, Spillers, which is an amazing way to burn through your student loan, as well as some lovely restaurants in the Castle and Morgan Arcades. The course was amazing too, felt very welcome and was able to grow academically thanks to the fantastic teachers.
