Course details
Course UCAS code: F713
Qualification type:
  • BSc (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
Explore all forms of ocean life, and gain the right skills to work around the globe, with Southampton's fantastic BSc Marine Biology degree. You will develop an understanding of global marine sciences with marine biology, covering a broad variety of topics from hydrothermal vents to coastal lagoons. This programme is based at our unique Waterfront Campus at the world-leading National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). Students are able to make use of the excellent new teaching labs and cutting-edge research labs as well as our fleet of research vessels which are only a 10 minute walk from the lecture theatres. Marine Biology has developed exponentially over the past years with, for example, the discovery of hydrothermal vents and cold seeps; the ability to conduct experimental programmes at sea; the use of molecular methods in marine biology and the huge expansion of the data base on marine animals. There has been a massive increase in the interest in marine biodiversity, in terms of the actual species, the causes of such high biodiversity, the scope for exploitation of these natural resources and the potential impact of climate and anthropogenic influences on biodiversity. As a result, marine biology students can expand their biology-knowledge base while appreciating the physico-chemical aspects of the marine environment. You will develop core knowledge and understanding of subject specific and transferable key skills. Teaching and learning through the degree programmes will be supported by tutor- and student-led tutorials, seminars and presentations, essays and report writing. You will be trained to make use of peer-reviewed internet sources to support guided independent study, group study and your own research. Our Marine Biology degree is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

The University of Southampton is a fantastic university which undertakes world-class research and amazing teaching. I have experienced first-hand the enthusiasm and passion of my lecturers and seminar tutors. The campus is particularly brilliant due to the large number of facilities based directly on campus such as the GP, Costa, Banking etc. In addition, the campus is incredibly green and is filled with nature and animals. The pastoral care is also very good and so it is easy to feel welcome at this institution.

Standing wise and lectures wise it has been good. The first year is harder cause you have to settle in and the teaching style of lectures were very different to school life.
