Qualification type:
  • BA (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
A Film and English degree at Southampton provides you with an education in visual culture, literature and theory. There are opportunities for field research, creative writing, as well as work experience in local schools. The close collaboration between Film and English gives this programme a strong intellectual coherence, while the textual and theoretical skills you will gain are designed to complement each other. There is a 50/50 split between the subjects, with a dissertation in either in year three.
Modules:
In your first year, you will take a balance of Film and English modules. In English, you will explore the form and material context of different literary narratives and debates in critical theory. In your Film modules, you will be introduced to key concepts and terminology through the analysis of sound, editing, lighting and camera work. In your second year you will choose from a wide range of film and literary topics from the medieval period to film noir. In your final year you will consolidate your knowledge and skills as a researcher in film and literary studies by completing a dissertation on a topic of your choice in either of your main subjects. The University of Southampton is a fantastic university which undertakes world-class research and amazing teaching. I have experienced first-hand the enthusiasm and passion of my lecturers and seminar tutors. The campus is particularly brilliant due to the large number of facilities based directly on campus such as the GP, Costa, Banking etc. In addition, the campus is incredibly green and is filled with nature and animals. The pastoral care is also very good and so it is easy to feel welcome at this institution.

I love my university and think that my feelings of isolation at the beginning would occur at any university if you are moving away from home. My only problem is with the lack of options on my course
