Course details
Course UCAS code: G1R2
Qualification type:
  • BSc (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 4 Years
Course Summary:
The growth of the European Union has led to a significant increase in career opportunities for graduates who have a high level of language capabilities in addition to the analytical and numerical skills developed whilst studying mathematics. You will normally spend the third year of this four-year degree programme studying mathematics at one of our partner universities, where your chosen language is normally spoken; see the lists of relevant institutions below. Your stay abroad will usually take place under the Erasmus scheme. Erasmus students normally qualify for an Erasmus Mobility grant, designed to help with the increased cost of living abroad. Studying mathematics abroad gives you the unique opportunity to immerse yourself completely in the local language and culture, both academically and socially. You will become highly fluent in your chosen language, and gain a deeper understanding of the social, economic and political make-up of your host country. While at Southampton your language training will concentrate on improving your linguistic skills of listening, understanding, speaking and writing.
Modules:
In the first, second and fourth years you will study mathematics modules alongside your chosen language. As well as improving your linguistic skills you will have the change to study other aspects of the culture through literature, film or theatre. A range of interdisciplinary options are also available. Your third year is spent in a country where your chosen language is spoken, offering you a unique opportunity to enhance your linguistic and cultural proficiency.

The University of Southampton is a fantastic university which undertakes world-class research and amazing teaching. I have experienced first-hand the enthusiasm and passion of my lecturers and seminar tutors. The campus is particularly brilliant due to the large number of facilities based directly on campus such as the GP, Costa, Banking etc. In addition, the campus is incredibly green and is filled with nature and animals. The pastoral care is also very good and so it is easy to feel welcome at this institution.

Fantastic, amazing, brilliant! I can't think of anymore adjectives! I just absolutely love it here so much. I think if you can get over the aesthetics of the student accomdation (which isn't really the most important thing anyway!) then I can't recommend Southampton enough! It's just amazing, the people are so lovely and more importantly, I couldn't be any happier with my course. Come to Southampton!!
