**Why choose this course**
If youâre undecided as to whether you want to study mathematics or physics at university, our Mathematics and Physics courses offer the perfect answer. Taught jointly by the two departments, our BSc, MMath and MPhys courses explore how mathematics is applied in physics. Whether you think of it as applied mathematics or theoretical physics, this joint course gives you the best of both worlds.
Our physics courses are ranked top 10 in the UK for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2018.
**What you will study**
Partnered with the National Physical Laboratory, Surreyâs mathematics and physics courses explore core topics across both subjects including calculus, quantum physics, linear algebra and particle physics. Youâll also get to choose from a range of fascinating optional modules â such as fluid dynamics, space science, Galois theory and general relativity â and take an extended project, enabling you to tailor the course to suit your own interests.
You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MMath (Master of Mathematics) or MPhys (Master of Physics), direct routes to a masters qualification. If you study toward one of the integrated masters, youâll spend part of your last year doing a research project in either physics (MPhys) or mathematics (MMath).

University life in Guildford is really great, the town and campus are warm and inviting, with a nice intimate vibe. Everyone here is so friendly and looks out for everyone else, it’s so refreshing. There's plenty to do it in the city, bear in mind some clubs can charge a fair bit on weekends, so stick to the student nights. The teaching is really strong, with approachable staff, good support on your assignments and a great library.
