Course Summary:
From exciting new developments in equine microbiology, nutrition and reproduction through to advances in biotechnology; if you aspire to a career in equine science, research or clinical practice, then our BSc (Hons) in Equine Science is the course for you. Offering a rich and varied syllabus that explores equine science from both clinical and welfare perspectives, the course facilitates the development of real world professional skills and knowledge essential to those wishing to work in a clinical or scientific context. Whilst focusing on equine systems, the modules taught are specially designed to deliver competence in transferable skills with relevance to a wide range of biological and animal science career paths. This comprehensive programme covers all aspects of equine science to provide students with the key knowledge and skills to enter the equine science industry. The majority of the modules on the programme are 'Core' modules; however, in your final year there are three optional modules to choose one from, which will allow you to tailor this year to your specific interests. The degree programme can either be studied purely academically as a three year programme or can be studied as a four year 'Sandwich' degree. If you choose the 'Sandwich' option, you will be required to undertake a minimum 48 week work placement (or two 24 week placements) in an area/s of your interest. The placement year is not mandatory but offers you an excellent opportunity to develop skills alongside your academic study, which will be recognised by future employers as a positive attribute. This course is validated in partnership with Coventry University.
Core Modules include: Year 1 Academic Study Skills & Entrepreneurial Thinking Mammalian Anatomy & Physiology Equine Industry Principles of Equine Science Equine & Human Nutrition Applied Equine Management. Year 2: Research Design & Analysis Equine Exercise Physiology Equine Reproduction & Management Equine Behaviour, Ethics & Welfare Equine Health & Disease Applied Equine Biomechanics. Year 3: Optional Placement Year. Final Year: Science Dissertation Sports Injury & Rehabilitation Veterinary Science Contemporary Issues in Equine Science Optional modules are: Elite Athletic Performance, Alternative Therapy in Veterinary Medicine or Advanced Equine Nutrition
