Which physics degree should I choose?

So you’re interested in a physics degree…but with so many different options available, it can be difficult to know which course you should choose.

You might already have a good understanding of which aspects of physics you enjoy most, or you may be completely unsure what you would like to study further - and that’s okay!

To help you understand which physics degree would suit you best, try taking our short quiz! This is designed to help you think about your interests and will suggest a course for you to consider.

What result did you get? Had you considered this course before? Let us know in this thread! And if you want to find out more about the different options available you can sign up for the Physics at Bath - Which course is right for you? webinar on 11th May.

Of course, this quiz is not conclusive and is not meant to define the next three to five years of your academic life - there are always options to change things and flexibility to switch between these courses even after you have started. However, we hope this has provided you with some guidance, and a better understanding of what is available to you.

Physics is a highly regarded degree and surprisingly versatile. Whichever course you choose, you’ll develop a number of useful skills that are applicable for further study or the world of work.

Physics graduates go on to a wide range of careers across industry and research roles and you will start to get a better understanding of what you would like to do once you begin your degree. Many courses offer placement years which can be great in order to gain valuable experience and apply the skills and knowledge from your studies. They also give you the chance to test out a career path you are interested in.

Studying physics at Bath

All of these courses are available to study at The University of Bath (all with an optional placement year). The Department of Physics has a portfolio of 4 different physics degrees to cater for all interests, meaning you can choose:

  • Physics BSc or MPhys (Hons)
  • Mathematics and Physics BSc or MSci (Hons)
  • Physics with Astrophysics BSc or MPhys (Hons)
  • Physics with Theoretical Physics BSc or MPhys (Hons) - new for a September 2022 intake!

All degrees are designed to give you a thorough grounding in physics and you will study the same modules across the first two years for Physics, Physics with Astrophysics and Physics with Theoretical Physics. In your third year, you start to specialise depending on your course. You will also undertake a project in your final year, where you have the opportunity to work closely with an active researcher in the field.

All physics courses offered at Bath include the option of a year long placement (and the opportunity to study abroad), some examples of which are included in the quiz above. Examples of where our students have carried out 6-month research placements in the past include:

  • NTT Basic Research Labs, Atsugi, Japan
  • Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stockholm
  • Instituto de Fisica Sao Carlos, Brazil
  • Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan
