How To Root Your Android Phone
< Back to the Mobile Phones Portal

Rooting your device may void its warranty. In addition, performing the rooting procedure incorrectly may have unexpected consequences. Please follow this guide at your own risk.

I don't want to scare people off too much, as if done correctly it has a lot of benefits. I rooted my first device with nothing more but a phone, a laptop and a guide like this. If you ever need any help, you can always ask in the Mobile Phone forum to request help. Feel free to quote me (DayneD89) as I'm usually around to offer help and advice. If rooting your phone does go wrong, the changes can usually be reverted (or made to look like the phone simply broke).

Why Root?

  • For techies like me, the fun of rooting a phone is reason in itself, but there are many reasons to root your android phone.
  • Rooting gives you much greater control over the phone, as it allows you to edit previously locked files on the phone. For example if your phone shows a logo of your network when you turn it on you can replace this with a downloaded image, or make your own.
  • Rooting allows you to run many programs that you would not be able to normally. A popular example of this is tethering, or sharing your phones Internet with computers or other phones over WiFi.
  • Rooting allows you to overclock your phone for faster performance, or underclock your phone for improved battery life.
  • Rooting allows you to install apps to your SD card rather than the phones memory. Though the apps will run slightly slower, this is useful if you are running out of internal memory.
  • Rooting means you can get the latest version of android before everyone else.

Universal Methods

If you're lucky, there is an easy way to root your phone. These are one-click methods, and are by far the easiest and safest. Here is a list of supported devices.

Super One-Click

This is a very popular and easy method, but it doesn't work for all phones. If your phone runs android 2.2 or earlier the chances are that it will work fine, but I do not know if the problems it has had with 2.3 have been fixed yet. Luckily, it does no harm to try it and see. Super One-Click is a simple app that you open and click the root button to root your phone. Yes, it really is that easy. It also has several other buttons, including to unroot your phone if you ever need to do so.

Note that the following phones will not be fully rooted by this method. For these devices see the unrevoked section below.

  • Sprint EVO 4G (HTC Supersonic)
  • Droid Incredible (HTC Incredible)
  • HTC Desire GSM
  • HTC Desire CDMA (HTC BravoC)
  • HTC Aria
  • Droid Eris (HTC DesireC)
  • HTC Wildfire (HTC Buzz)

How to use

1. Enable USB debugging on your phone. Settings->Applications->Development and enabling->USB Debugging
2. Download Super One-Click to your computer from the link above.
3. Connect phone to your computer, making sure that you are not mounting the SD card.
4. Launch SuperOnceClick.exe
5. Click Samsung Captivate at the top if that is your phone, otherwise click universal.
6. Click 'root'. This will take some time. It is highly recommended you do not disconnect the phone during this time.
