Electrical and electronic engineering degree personal statement example (1f)

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements.

A keen electronic engineer, I have an excellent knowledge of electronic systems and have completed a wide variety of engineering activities beyond the standard curriculum. I have taken on a number of special projects and responsibilities that have enabled me to develop both my engineering ability and wider skills which include building a RapMan 3.2 3D printer and engaging local primary schools in engineering and design based activities, for which I earned an Advanced STEM Leaders Award. I was also awarded the highly prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, sponsored by Rolls-Royce, following a rigorous selection process.

My academic background is strong, the results from my engineering diploma being especially impressive, where I scored full marks on three units, and above 90% on the remaining five. I achieved full marks in module one of my maths GCSE and unit two of my German GCSE. I was also awarded maximum marks for the Higher Project Qualification, where I designed a website showcasing the work of my school's DT department, and trained staff to maintain it.

I am a capable independent worker and have taken on a number of individual projects. In the coursework project for my AS systems and control, I elected to design and make an electronic dart board. This was an opportunity to learn about advanced electronic systems, particularly digital displays and microprocessors. This demonstrated my strong design skills and a good level of competence in manufacturing a complex design. In my Extended Project Qualification, I chose to study the social and economic impacts of robotics - an area that I am extremely interested in. During this project, I investigated the current and potential uses of robotics in a number of industries. I conducted research for this project by reading a number of academic journals and carrying out visits to several facilities where robots are either relied upon or not used. This project has been immensely inspiring, and has provided me with insights into a fascinating and diverse sector of engineering that I would be extremely excited to, one day, be involved with.

I am a strong team worker and leader, leading a team through the local and regional finals in the Mission Virgin Galactic competition. As team leader, I ensured that all team members were given manageable tasks, and mediated in situations where the team was unable to make a unanimous decision. Additionally, I was part of a team at my school that built a Caterham 7 Sports Car, the completion of which demonstrates my ability to succeed in a long term project.

I have undertaken a number of work experience placements. In 2011, I spent a week in software engineering at UBC Interbulk and another at an engineering company called Specac. These opportunities allowed me to see how the problem solving and practical skills that I have developed are applied in industrial environments. In 2013, I spent a week shadowing employees at Rolls-Royce, Derby. This was a fascinating experience as I was able to explore the day to day activities of one of the world's top engineering companies. I also attended a taster day at Imperial College.

For the last four years, I have helped my school exhibit at the Dartford Industrial Heritage Day. This has involved a diverse range of tasks from running and maintaining micro steam cars, to demonstrating and explaining the workings of a 3D printer to non-technical attendees. This required strong communication skills and an ability to interact with the community. I regularly assist in demonstrating my school's engineering facilities to prospective pupils. I am also a school prefect, and have represented Bromley in archery at the London Youth Games for seven years.

In conclusion, I believe that the great range of activities I have participated in demonstrate my enthusiasm for my subject as well as the broad skill set which will allow me to succeed and participate in the academic and social life of your University.
