Connaught

Room Types available: Catered. Basic and Standard + Washbasin.

No of Rooms: 289

No of people sharing a kitchen: around 15 (in old quad)

No of people sharing a toilet: around 15 (in old quad) and usually two toilets per block

No of people sharing a shower/bath: around 15, and usually 2 showers and 1 bath per block

Connaught is part of the Wessex Lane complex; it is a 15 minute walk from Highfield (uni campus). It has regular buses linking it to Highfield (5 mins) Portswood (10/15 mins) the hospital (20 mins) and the City (30 mins).

It is part catered halls, meaning once a day you get breckfast and dinner.

In Old Quad you share a two floored block (more like a house) with 14 other people. You have two toilets and a bathroom with six sinks, two showers and one bath in it. The kitchens are very small but all have a fridge, oven, grill and microwave (some have a freezer). The bedrooms in Old Quad are huge, but with no washbasin.

In New Quad it a more traditional corridor layout with less people in it. The rooms are smaller with a washbasin in them, or with a washbasin between two outside two bedroom doors. They have bigger kitchens all with a freezer.

Connaught has it's own bar and common room, and is a very lively hall.

As it is quite small (200+ people) it has a great atmosphere and you get to know everyone very well.

South Stoneham Tower

The myth and legend that is Stoneham. Apparently planned to be demolished for years, yet mysteriously first years still seem to be put into this great tower block. Not the best accommodation in the world, but made up with cheap prices. However, hopefully, it will be torn down soon - amidst the rumours of asbestos and rats - so should not be used as accommodation in 2006.

No of people sharing a toilet:

No of people sharing a shower/bath:

basically chamberlain(chambers) is split into three blocks, A/B/C, in A there are 4 floors, B and C have 3 floors, per floor/corridor there are 19 rooms(i think), there are two sets of three toilets one at each end of the corridor, two showers four baths and about 10 wash basins, also half the rooms have wash basins, chambers is catered, which initially i thought was going to be rubbish but actually i think it saves a lot of hassle in your first year and makes it a very sociable(the most social) halls in soton, we have our own bar pool tables a music room and have a projector downstairs which shows films/sporting events/generally anything you want, awesome bar staff and wardens, im chamberlain till I die

Note that Chamberlain Halls will NOT be used for Undergraduate accommodation from the year 2011/12 onwards due to cost constraints.

Hartley Grove

Room Types available: Ensuite, self catered

No of Rooms: many, three blocks Ash, Beech, Cedar

No of people sharing a kitchen: 6

No of people sharing a toilet: One

No of people sharing a shower/bath: no baths here im afriad

Hartley Grove is an expensive, but fairly luxury halls of residence. Its over the road from Glen Eyre, so is actually part of the 'Chamberlain' complex despite having a Glen post code. Hartley is split into three blocks as it says above, and the blocks are split into sections; in each section there is 8 flats split onto four floors. Its six to a flat, each with your own bathroom but sharing a fairly small kitchen considering its self catered. The rooms are large, and there is loads of storage space (huge wardrobe, under the bed storage, 6 desk draws, desk shelves and bedside table)! The ensuites are also big, and its not a wet room like at lots of unis, its a shower which dosent go all over the floor. Two lights in the bedroom so nice and bright and a massive desk with internet access and lots of plugs. Main downside is that you have to pay for your electricity; you buy top up cards from reception and have a meter in the room. It goes down quickly if you have the heater on all the time! Hartley, in my experience, is quite a quiet halls. Some people have said it doesnt have the same atmosphere as chamberlain, but it is very popular and very chilled, which after the burst of freshers week, which is going to be mental wherever you are, it is a luxry! You do have chambers bar litterally on your doorstep for that kind of thing - there is always something going on there! Its expensive, but clean, well kept and great rooms.

South Hill Hall

Room Types available: Ensuite

No of Rooms: In a block (there are 3 blocks): 8 a flat, 3 flats on a floor, 3 floors.

No of people sharing a kitchen: 8

No of people sharing a toilet: own bathroom

No of people sharing a shower/bath: Own bathroom, although the water pressure isn't great! Bring storage for showering supplies. Bit dark: no natural light, loud extractor fan comes on with the light, stiff shower. Always tuck the shower curtain into the shower tray! Quite a good bathroom.

The Rooms:Plenty of storage in the rooms: Under the bed, huge shelves. Large desk, but not a lot of light, but you get side lights which are very bright. Very warm, unless you have an end room! (And an extra window.) If you find you have an end room, paticullarly on a low floor invest in a heater. Radiators are ok: state of repair varies a lot. Contents: Large notice board, coat hooks, shelves, desk, 2 chairs, bed, 2 cupboards, bedside table, bin. 8 Plug points plus phone line/ethernet port, aerial port. Carpet on one wall. Greeny, brown colour scheme, cream walls. Lots of floor space (More than some places!) Good signal. Plenty of draws in desk. Can hear traffic if facing out onto road, but you can see the bus stop! Louder if facing courtyard, due to drunkards, but nicer view.

The Kitchens: Larger than most, but can get cramped around meal times. Two sinks. Cleaner 4 days a week (They won't do the washing up though!). Lots of light in hallways. Microwave, two hobs one oven. Not enough cupboard/fridge/freezer space.

Let types: In Block A, only a 30 week let (Have to move out for Easter), Else 39 week.

Richard Newitt Courts

Room Types available: Halls complex split into blocks. A, B, C and J overlook a lawn and pond. Blocks D, E, F, G and H all have garden areas in front of them. Blocks C, D, E and H are all virtually next door to the Glen Bar and the famed 'Q (or Kiyu) Burger'.

No of Rooms: In the three-storey buildings, typically 25-30 rooms in each. Around 60 rooms in block W.

No of people sharing a kitchen: 3-4 in the three-buildings, up to 8 potentially in the larger block.

No of people sharing a toilet: Same as for kitchens.

No of people sharing a kitchen: 6 people at Enhanced Media:STP60971.JPG- to the left of the picture around the corner is the fridge and freezer , Media:STP60972.JPG- a shot to show u the kind of size of the kitchen , Media:STP60973.JPG- the kitchen table (excuse all the washing up!). Because of the way the building is laid out, in fact every other kitchen is slightly smaller. But its still a good size- our kitchen is massive as its only for 6 people who inevitably will be cooking at different times anyway. Even a decent size to have a party in!

No of people sharing a toilet: 2 bathrooms between 6 people. showers are huge- we fitted 10 people into ours!

No of people sharing a shower/bath: 2 bathrooms containing sink, toilet and shower between 6 people. Media:STP60974.JPG- doesn't really show you quite how big the shower is, but it goes all the way back in level with the wall above/behind the toilet. Like I said- we squeeze 10 people in.

Aubrey

How to describe Aubrey house... Well, imagine heaven, then fill it with very cheap drinks. Aubrey house has about 230 people in it so there's a real sense of community. As it's part-catered, the kitchens are rubbish (4 hobs and one microwave to about 20 people. Hint: for weekends get takeaways and microwavable stuff if you can afford it) but the actual food they serve is quite nice, although can be repetitive. Aubrey house has a big JCR with a table tennis table, a 3/4 size snooker table (with pool balls, snooker balls and scoreboard) and a big telly. We're 2 minutes walk to Avenue campus and 7 minutes walk from Highfield campus, which makes us the closest halls to either (crawling out of bed and straight into lectures is a great plus).

There's also a bar in the first floor. It's tiny but you can take your drinks all over Highfield Halls, and it's ultra cheap. £1.50 a pint during Happy Hour. If you want to go upmarket there are two pubs around the corner (The Crown - Very popular & The Highfield (Not so popular)) as well as a corner shop. There are also good public transport connections. If you're not walking to Highfield campus, to get a bus there's a bus stop which is 2 minutes walk away which the U2 stops at.

We're also right next to Southampton Common (across the road kind of 'next to')

A couple of the only downsides is there's only 2 washers and 2 driers. For God's sake don't try and get your washing done on a weekend. And because everybody's so sociable you WILL catch fresher's flu when you arrive. Bring paracetamol and Lemsip.

With Gateley it is the most convenient hall for getting to town, 10-15 min walk or 5 minute bus ride. This is also convinient for going to ASDA as you don't have too far to carry your shopping (unlike people at Monte/Glen Eyre, etc). The bus up to Highfield takes 10-15 mins, there are two bus routes, U1A (every 10 mins) and U2B (every 30 mins), with the last bus back to Archers Road at half past 11 pm. For £1.50 the safety bus will take care of you after that. Highfield campus is within walking distance, but it takes around 40 minutes, Avenue campus is even closer.

Most flats have small kitchens, however those in the middle of the block have one less bedroom and a kitchen almost double the size. Also, the en suites are smaller than at Glen Eyre but they are still very comfortable rooms with huge desks, plenty of shelf and drawer space and the wardrobe is a decent size too. The big advantage for me was the TV aerial points in the rooms, I've managed to get Freeview but channel 5 is crap! Wired internet access in each room.

On site laundry room (also for use by Gateley residents) and a common room with pool tables, etc, and only a couple of doors down from Archers Bar! Also within walking distance of Bedford Place, where all the popular clubs are.

Much smaller than Monte/Glen Eyre, etc, so feels much more like a community.

Only slight downside is the 5-10 min walk to and from the bus stop, however you very quickly get used to this.

Shared Houses

Shared houses tend to be uncommon amongst First-year undergraduate students, but are sometimes a last resort for either students who fail to apply for accommodation on time, or for those who chose Southampton as their insurance choice and are therefore not guaranteed a Halls room.

When spaces are available it's normally reasonably easy to find people with a space in their house, or at worst a private 1-bedroom flat.

Prices vary considerably throughout the city, depending on location, build quality, landlord, University proximity and Portswood/City proximity. It has been known to find houses as cheap as £57 per week, though most student houses will fall in the £65-80 per week bracket (excluding bills, which vary on how many people you live with and what you have but are generally no more than about £20-30 a month per person).

Usually the houses are concentrated in student-heavy areas (such as Avenue Road/Alma Road/Gordon Avenue in Portswood or Shaftesbury Avenue/Church Lane/Northcote Road near the University) and never too far from everything you need.
