University_review_small.png The Browne Review, or Independent Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance is a panel chaired by Lord Browne of Madingley to consider the future of higher education funding in England.

His findings and recommendations will be presented to the Government, who will then make decisions based on the conclusions, regardin financial support for full and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The review in brief (quoting from the report):

Mboard1.png Students pay nothing up front. Graduates only make payments when they are earning above £21,000 per year.

Mboard1.png Payments are affordable – 9% of any income above £21,000.

Mboard1.png If earnings drop, then payments drop. If graduates stop work for whatever reason, then payments stop as well.

Mboard1.png Additional support for students from families with an income below £60,000 per year, up to £3,250 in grants

Mboard1.png Support for living costs available to all through an annual loan of £3,750. No means testing for access to loans for living costs.

Mboard1.png The interest rate on the loans is the low rate that Government itself pays on borrowing money. There is a rebate for low earners.

Mboard1.png Any balance remaining after 30 years is written off.
