My offer for chem eng is A* in maths and AAA in further maths, physics and chemistry. They never asked for my ums but I had 4A's at AS level. My gcse's were 8A*'s and 2 A's.

I applied to both cambridge and imperial and based on my experience I'd say it is a lot harder to get into cambridge. My interview at imperial was just a chat (not sure if this is the norm) but at cambridge I had to sit a maths test and have two interviews which were maths based.

Cambridge actually made you do a test? Even after making you jump through all of their hoops and submit UCAS early and asking for a photo and all your UMS scores? Ridiculous.
What was your UMS average btw?

Why not have a closer look at the contents of the course modules? The description documents sometimes contain reading lists. In browsing through them you'll develop a sense of the level of mathematics involved.

The module description documents for your course can be accessed here:
http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/civilengi...s/ewresyllabus

Module CI9-EE-18 for example will go more smoothly if you have a good understanding of the S1 module under the GCE A Level mathematics syllabus. Any general introductory textbook on statistics will give you a sufficient grounding. In terms of any knowledge you'll be expected to have on, say, partial differentials, I highly recommend Herbert Gross's MIT video lectures (parts 1 and 2) accessible under MIT's OpenCourseWare Supplemental Resources.

In any event the contacts for the course will be happy to outline which mathematical compentencies they'd like to see.

This shows how biased and illogical some readers are in general.

If Imperial has a high dropout rate, can that not be interpreted as Imperial has high standards and those who do eventually graduate are something special?

Take a step back and look at the proportion who apply to Oxbridge with A*A*A* or more. What percentage of these students fail to get an offer or meet it?

So are those deemed failures too?

My advice is literally do what Imperial wants on their website - they're very straight forward about their requirements and as long as you satisfy the requirements, have your application deemed acceptable, and that there are places on the course (which usually are a couple), they you're through. =]

Good luck if you're doing it!

Hi there!
I'm currently a final year life...

Hi there!
I'm currently a final year life sciences student at Imperial and qutie a few of my friends are on (finishing!) their placement years at the moment (from both biochem and biology =]) so hopefully I can be of help!

As far as I know, you'll have to organise your placement yourself, though you'll receive guidance and support from the various staff (esp your personal tutor and the industry/placement coordinator, who's currently Dr E. Cota Segura).
What happens is you'll start thinking about your placements around November in your second year, have a talk from the coordinator, careers advisor staff and etc in a talk in about a few months' time. They'll also provide you with list of places if you can't find any and the undergrad office often email all industry placement students with any potential placements they know of as well.

Once you've found one you want, you go through the various processes (applications, tests (if any)) and your personal tutor and/or coordinator will write you your references and etc.

You may get interviewed and if you get offered a place, jsut go through the confirmation and paper work process like a normal internship and voila, you're sorted!

As for placements relating to conservation/environment, I think there are a few out there, not sure about actual links Imperial has though. Though I do know the biologists have a competitive placement/trip after second year in Uganda to do with biodiversity/environment.

But like I said, most of the organisation is up to yourself and there's almost no limit to where you do your placement! =]

Hope this kind of helps!

Good luck with them! Just personal opinion, but definitely don't rule out an option just because it only covers part of the costs (unless a scholarship stipulates you're not allowed to receive any other awards if you take this one up.)

Every little bit helps, really - even if your parents end up having to pay some of it, if it's less than what the full sticker price is that's already progress. It doesn't have to be "all or nothing".

It's commonplace in America for instance for people to apply for many different grants, get a bit of money here and there from various companies, and it then hopefully adds up to give you a final amount that you can at least afford a bit better. I myself am on two different grants, one which covers part of my living expenses every month (it used to cover all when I was in cheap halls), and one for just my second year's fees. My parents cover the rest of the living expenses and I sometimes work to supplement that too.

Aid for internationals from Imperial or England...

Aid for internationals from Imperial or England is - I'm sorry to say - pretty rare (note I'm talking about non-EU internationals.) Most of us from abroad who have aid usually obtain it from our own countries (the government, corporations, etc.) Some companies actually do offer scholarship schemes, but sometimes you have to ask for money yourself.
You might want to write some letters to companies who might be interested in your qualification/you as a potential employee, etc, and appeal for help (so maybe Shell if you were going into Chem Eng, etc etc.) Not easy, because you need to make an amazing impression in a letter and it's hard to do it when you're straight up asking for money - but you've got nothing to lose.

If you read the online documentation and do a bit more research, the College Hardship fund isn't a constant supply of cash - and it even explicitly states that "grants cannot be made to assist with tuition fee payment."

http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/studentfi...s/hardshipfund

It's only meant for small emergency top-ups for people who suddenly find that their expenses have exceeded what they have, through no fault of their own. So for instance if you suddenly have been evicted from your place without warning and are running low because you had to spend extra paying a hefty deposit on a new place, the fund can help. You're not meant to rely on it from the start of your course.

It's not easy, I know. It can be done though somehow. Most people from my country are either fully funded by parents or by full-ride government/company scholarships. Myself though, I've funded the past two years via various means...each year's funding has come from a different source, because my government and a lot of corporations don't understand my degree (I'm a biomedical engineer) so won't fund it. My first year came from various family members (their idea not mine), my second from a single-year education loan I took out from my dad's company. I'm not sure how I'm funding my 3rd and 4th years either, but I'm going to take it as it comes. It helps to have supportive parents who can help with some paperwork too, and I have a grant from the World Scientific publishing company that goes towards rent.

Worst case scenario, you defer your offer for one year and see if you can spend that year working/saving/applying for funding schemes. It's not the end of the world if you can't go straightaway (or ever) because of money. The key thing is to try.

PS// If you're an Engineer, look up the IET awards. I believe the deadline isn't over yet. It's a small amount of money, but anything helps for expenses and the like, right?

Hi everybody,

I am an international student from the Netherlands and I have received several conditional offers to study Mathematics, a.o. one from Imperial and one from UCL.

So last week, I went to both universities and looked around. My impression of the two universities was pretty good. It seemed to me that UCL has a nice atmosphere with a very diverse student body in a nice setting. Moreover, there were lots of asians at the maths departments (I am also an asian). However, the maths building/department looked kind of cramped and small and the facilities looked old.

On the other hand, the Imperial college has great facilities with an impressive campus. The student body is diverse as well, but different compared to UCL's student body. The big difference is the atmosphere, people didn't seem to be very enjoying their time at Imperial.

Well I must take into account that I was visiting both universities around exam periods, so people were probably stressed out and didn't have enought sleep.

So could you guys help me out and give your overall view about both universities and perhaps tell me why you have chosen for Imperial college. I do know that both maths departments are outstanding, although there might be slight differences. I am particularly interested in the overall student experience. Thank you.

Lol, I thought Imperial's student satisfaction on some university ranking went up this year? I enjoyed the company, the people and the contacts that I have made throughout studying Maths at Imperial. However, I was nearly crippled and shattered by the relentless schedule and the lack of support. If not for my amazing personal tutor, I don't think I would have graduated!

Hi everyone,

Next year I am planning to apply...

Hi everyone,

Next year I am planning to apply for postgraduate Computing at Imperial College. I am an Electrical Engineering major and I have done my fair share of programming throughout my undergraduate degree (I dealt a lot with signal processing etc.). Now I would like to transition to "finance", specifically, I want to work in areas that involve algorithm development for trading, optimization etc...

This being said, I'm not sure if I should opt for the MSc in Computing Science or MSc in Computing (Computational Management Science specialist) for example. Computing Science would help me learn C++ and some other programming languages however I'm sure I can pick those up as I go along if I were to choose the other course.

I guess my main concern is whether the two courses actually lead to different job prospects or whether I'd have the same opportunities irregardless of the course I take. I know the DoC department is well renowned, and the fact that imperial is in London is another plus.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello,

I've rummaged the net in search of any university in UE at which there is a good research group in areas of my interest. There are no such many, although one of them is Imperial College.
ICL appears to be great university, studying there would be a wonderful intellectual experience.

I'm acquainted with application procedure and requirements, nevertheless I've got questions, to which answers are hardly to be found on the official site of ICL.

I'd be grateful if anybody could tell me:

- is it easy to become a PhD student at Department of Maths (I'm interested in Applied Maths Section)? What percentage of candidates is rejected?

- what is mainly taken into consideration, by admission team, in application process cause I don't know what really counts.

- how interview looks alike, what kind of questions one should expect? Are there any necessary exams to be passed besides TOEFL/IELTS?

Greetings

Hi

I'm a 2nd year at Imperial and there's a chance I'm going to fail at least a few of this year's exams due to various 'mitigating circumstances' (I got a high 2.1 last year). Taking a guess (I'm seeing my tutor when I'm back at uni next week) if I do fail one or more exams I'll either be offered resits during the summer holiday or be asked to take a year out and resit the exams the same time next year.

If I get asked to take a year out, does this mean things like my Imperial login/IT account will be suspended (and thus it will be hard to access new material for the courses/exams I am resitting, as courses change slightly from year to year)?

Also will I still be counted as part of the Imperial College Union and be able to join clubs and societies etc (which may affect whether I choose to stay in London and rent with friends from uni, or move back home for the year)?

Thanks

So, I took a year out to resit my first year exams. Your account still works, and you can join societies without any hassle. You must have been in the year I was in. Were your mitigating circumstances actually real or is it just because of the massive workload in second year? I'm wondering whether I should really bother going back, or take up another uni's offer.

Imperial halls are currently a sticking point for student satisfaction... it ranges from 2 mins from college paying nearly £200 a week or 40 mins by tube in some rubbish west london place. (also paying a lot). Living in rented accommodation with 2-4 other students is a good idea.

I lived at griffon last year and wood lane this...

I lived at griffon last year and wood lane this year. Griffon is really good (maybe even better than wood lane!). Honestly don't worry about the area at all the site is so secure and homely. Loads of my Imperial friends live at griffon and they all love it.

I haven't seen the new pure site but they look nice. Hammersmith though is not a nice area at all (I know I have to study at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith). It's a noisy run down area of London.

Hope this helps a bit.

Brushing up on maths is definitely a good idea,...

Brushing up on maths is definitely a good idea, and if you haven't done further maths, it's worth looking over the spec for it/textbooks, and perhaps trying to learn some of the content from it. You will get taught all the stuff you need to know of course, but it helps to know and come to terms with some things before (some methods of integration, complex numbers, differential equations, etc). Brushing up on what you learnt in physics will obviously help too.

You'll probably have a short maths test once you start anyways. Hope that helps!

Hi Spank,

Lucky you! I have applied to this...

Hi Spank,

Lucky you! I have applied to this course for 2 times 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. My background is Industrial Engineering and Operation Research with 3 years work experience in Metals and Mining Industry. But I failed on my application.

My expectation is I want to switch my career to Mineral Economics or enter my career to Global Metals and Mining Industry which I believe to be Imperial Graduate will sound aloud to employer.

I am little bit confuse, Imperial really looks on your Undergraduate Study. I have graduated not from Europe or US uni, and I think that makes my application fail.

Hope someday I can be accepted! I try to reapply

What do you mean by "there's a number of people who go off to work for Airbus on their industrial placements"? Can you take a year off and do an industrial placement at Imperial, or is one included in the course structure? Last time I checked, there weren't any placement opportunities at Imperial, but if there are, this would be great! :D

Yeah you can take a year off, most people do it between their 3rd and final year. You need to be on a 2.1 or first or they won't let you.

The placement is not included in the course structure at the moment, but I hear that's going to change in some way within the next 4 years.

but when private schools educate 7% of the school population it's interesting to see why a university may have a disproportional amount.
