I know this post isn't directed at me, but 3 Higher languages would have been indescribably amazing. :$ I kind of regret taking some subjects this year now. I wish I could have crashed Higher Spanish from scratch and done Higher Latin instead of English and modern studies. Then I could have done French, German, Spanish, History, and Latin. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to take Latin when I originally joined my school in 2nd year (because I'd never studied it before) and next year is the first year Spanish will be offered.

I have the Higher notes book which is pretty good and to be honest there isn't a huge difference with Advanced Higher - just things like advertising/marketing/manufacturing systems.. Just try and get examples of celeb endorsement, advances in technology things like that.. also memorising facts/changes in your outcomes (like the history of a product outcome)

I didn't even sit Higher - I'm crashing Advanced Higher haha! But my folio is expected to get atleast 130/150 which would sit me at a C going into the exam which is what I need to get into uni haha! How was your extended case study? How many people do this at your school? we only have the three of us haha!

Thanks so much as I was actually a little worried it wasn't very good or relevant - thanks! :) yeah I had a similar reaction but other texts were Hardy and the question featured a more minor character that none of us had looked at so we all went for Williams.

Ask the person in your school that manages the SQA contact and scripts and ask them if you can add it on the inside cover - most of the time they don't send the scripts off for a wee bit so if you do it immediately tomorrow then you might be able to (although rules vary between places so they may not let you)

Even if you don't it won't make a difference to your grade - in the marking instructions for English it says that markers who come across papers without the dissertation items in the inside cover just go to the principal assessor who will then (I presume, doesn't specifically say this) look up the dissertation and check all is correct. It has no bearing on the grade or mark you get whatsoever, so don't panic! :)

Five Highers Panic?!?

I'd personally say don't panic and try to enjoy...

I'd personally say don't panic and try to enjoy it. I did 5 highers last year and found all of them OK. Hardest was English but if you read the text you are given and do some practice papers, especially close reading, you should be fine. For the essay practices, I just found all the essays that suit my text from past papers, which came to a grand total of 14 and made essay plans, I didn't actually write the essays.
I'm doing Higher Chemistry this year (a little bit panicky for the exam tho). I didn't do standard grade or int1/2 so I'm not sure how useful my experience is. But I think it's not the most difficult subject. It's got a little bit of theory and you have to remember some PPAs and do a few calculations but that's about it. I found SG questions (which sometimes creep into past papers and stuff) hardest cos I've never learnt them. But they are generally 1 mark questions or multiple choice so I just take a random guess ^^
Higher maths, believe it or not, was actually one of the easier subjects. I know the 2012 paper is hard but practice makes (near) perfect! and rejoice you've got a formula sheet in the exam (I know I won't get one for the Advanced Higher T_T)
My sister did Higher Music and got an A last year. She said it was fun and it's pretty much standard grade but everything gets a bit harder :) Hope this helps.

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but I'm...

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but I'm just going to leave this here for future students reference :

QUESTIONS ABOUT CONCLUSIONS : i.e, how effective do you find this paragraph as a conclusion to the ideas before/ the passage as a whole
Look for : 1) A word or idea that sums something up
2) Significant sentence structure such as identifiable rhythm created by alliteration, lists or climax.
3)Any phrase or idea that is dramatic and/or memorable
4)Any Imagery
5)A reference to the beginning of the passage or the title reminding the reader of the subject matter

QUESTIONS ABOUT TONE : i.e, identify the writers tone
The chances are the tone will be sarcastic or humorous in the exam - though it may be ironic, sardonic(mocking), bitter, angry, despairing, nostalgic etc. Once you identify the tone show how it is created by treating the question as a word choice, sentence structure, or language.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SENTENCE STRUCTURE :
1)Lists, emphasizing [range, variety, extent, or number] of [example]
2) Repetition - ALWAYS used for emphasis
3)Long sentence followed by a shorter sentence - the dramatic impact is usually on the second sentence (climax/anticlimax)
4) Unusual word order (inversion)
5)Prepositional phrases (in spite of, before, after etc.) at the beginning of sentences can guide the reader through stages in the argument or indicate a time sequence
6)Questions - rhetorical - invite the reader to think and share the writers opinion or could suggest reflection or confusement
7)Use of Imperatives (commands) reinforce a point being made
8)Parallelism! Look for a balance in sentences or in a paragraph where a similar grammatical structure can be identified - this can make sentences easier to process.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LANGUAGE : These questions primarily want you to consider the writers :
1) Word choice
2) Sentence structure
3) Tone
4) Imagery (if present)

QUESTIONS ON WORD CHOICE :
1) Identify a word that the writer uses to a particular purpose. Example : "Grotesque".
2) Show how this purpose is achieved by stating connotations : Example : "negative connotations of being disgusting and horrible"
3) Link to the context : Example : "The writer uses this to show how drugs cheats in the Olympics are disgusting and horrible to show his major dislike of them."

IMAGERY, metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia etc. ALWAYS INCLUDE THE LITERAL ROOT. ALWAYS. Can't stress that enough. ALWAYS. Example : "The silver dart flew through the air" (referring to Concord) -
1) you HAVE to mention something along the lines of "a dart is a streamlined, pointed object that can easily fly through the air"
2) and THEN link that to Concord - "which is similar to Concord as"
3) and THEN say how they are similar - "Concord is also streamlined and pointed at the tip and also flies through the air"
4) and THEEEEEEN state the writers intention - "which is used by the writer to emphasize Concord's supreme ability to fly and to show his love of it"

QUESTIONS ON COMPARISON (HIGHER ONLY) : These are usually the last question in the Higher paper, and the example from 2012 (Higher) is
-----"Consider the attitude displayed by each writer towards the Olympic Games.
Identify key areas of agreement and disagreement in their points of view. You should support your answer by referring to important ideas in the passages.
You may present your answer to this question in continuous prose or in a series of developed bullet points."------
Stick closely to the instructions in the question about whether to write about similarities OR differences OR both. For example, if it is about similarities and you spot a difference, IGNORE IT.
The key to this question is to focus on MAJOR ideas spread across paragraphs. Don't focus on minor points!
Planning is also key to these questions. Look at these questions BEFORE starting the paper and leave time whilst doing the other questions to jot down the important ideas in the paragraph beside it, or make a table. If you plan well and do this, this question shouldn't take too long.
These answers are not marked according to length of according to the number of points made. You will have to identify at least two or three of the most important points for a minimum of three marks. The final marks will depend on HOW WELL you DEVELOP these points by REFERRING to the passage to support these points.

Just saw this thread - I swear I'm not spamming all language and literature related things :p This is a link of a guide I made for those doing languages if you need advice. http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2320896

There are some documents attached with useful Spanish/French essay phrases which you could use if you wanted. It could help make your writing a little bit more impressive. :) If you use it, then I'd say to only memorise a handful of the phrases - you can apply them to almost any essay and you'll only use a few in the exam anyways. :) I know that I use the same phrases I've been using since S5 at uni. I've added a few obviously, but I just use some to express myself.

Some are more complicated, so if you find them difficult or something, just ignore them, :) Sometimes it's better to keep it simple and safe! Remember that these phrases were made mostly during my Advanced Higher and 1st year of uni (some in Higher) so don't think that you need them to get an A or a B or whatever. It's just there to support what you already have/know. :)

I sat it last year and it was excellent (we also had an amazing teacher) but don't believe what everyone says about it being a guaranteed A. It's a fair bit of work and if you have a lot of trouble with essays then you'll most likely find this a tricky subject. A lot of my classmates found that out the hard way :/

But it is really interesting and if you're prepared to revise a lot of different information including memorising lots of Latin and Greek words then it's well worth it!

I have done Education, Gender equality, Generational Gap, Marriage and the Internet.
Do you think that's enough or will i teach my self some other topics just in case.

See, my school have been a shambles in terms of teaching the Advanced Higher Course. We won't do a prelim, so we don't have appeal evidence, but worst, we don't know how good/bad we are at parts of the course. We have never done anything under exam conditions , so basically we could all be working at D's and still be thinking that were good enough to get an A.

That's why I am worrying so much about the exam...

First of all, don't panic. :) If it helps you, at university no-one on my course has done a single thing under timed condition before my exam which is next week. :p I wouldn't self-learn more topics and to be honest, if there's something on immigration or racism it should be quite simple. :) Remember I wrote an essay on bull-fighting - it was okay as I said things like on the one hand, we should respect animals etc etc and on the other hand how it has importance in culture. I still managed to get 32 because my grammar was good. My vocab was decent; it wasn't that bad. If there's nothing on the topics you've done, try to improvise - introduction, argument for/against, argument for/against and conclusion. Keep it simple if you're in a tricky situation.

I realise this question wasn't directed at me, so I hope you won't think I'm being presumptuous by interrupting. :) Following on from what skier said, the pronunciation and spelling is quite straightforward as german is a phonetic language, however, what some people find tricky is the grammar because of the cases and word order. Once you get your head round it though, it's not that bad. I think the same advice applies to learning any language, really. The more you immerse yourself in it, the easier it becomes. I have certainly found that listening to German radio, reading newspaper articles has helped a lot and makes the higher course seem so much more straightforward. I do French as well by the way, although German is my preferred language and I do better in it. It's nice to see that you are going to study languages at uni as well. I hope to study German and Russian. :)

No,no, your advice is really appreciated. Yeah, I think German has a secret place in my heart, love everything about it. It sounds great and wished i had the opportunity to study at school. However, i have to admit , a little of my interest is selfish:$, German is one of the biggest business languages in the world, and I want to do business at Uni , so i think it will put me better in a better place to get a job.

How hard do you think learning German will be through books, radio, internet?

Sorry been a couple of days since I replied to anyone haha! Yeah I thought the Volksgemeinschaft one was fine but the wording of it got me a little, wasn't sure if it was only asking what they aimed to achieve or if they achieved it? And yeah the essay questions were all really fair I thought, I was so worried that they would be horrendous and I'd end up bubbling as soon as I opened my paper (which would be very awkward since I was the only one in the school taking it and got a whole classroom to myself... lucky me.) I just regret not looking so much into the rise to Chancellorship for Hitler but I'm not going to dwell too much on it! I'm sure you'll all have done great! :D

Ah help! So it's 13 days till the exam, and anyone got any predictions on the listening/listening essay topic?!
Also any tips for improving the Directed Writing would be gratefully received:D

I did Higher German last year, and for the Directed Writing, my main tip would be to try and learn as many set phrases as possible. Before my exam, I had learnt a couple of sentences to say how I got to Germany/Austria, some phrases about who I went with, what I gained from the experience etc. etc.
Basically, try to prepare some sentences that you can just slot in, if the bullet points allow. Apart from that, practise, practise, pratise. I went through as many past papers as I could get my hands on to see which points the exam board made most often (as in "say how you got there") and tried to make sure that I at least had an idea of what I could say.

Aside from that, in the exam - make sure that you check and double check that you've covered each of the points. Otherwise, it can be really pretty costly... Good luck!!!

What ways are people learning long peices of texts like drama and novels. I'm doing streetcar and gatsby and it is taking a long time to learn. Whats the most important aspects and quickest method to learn so that during the exam i can remember it. Hope this makes sense!

Posted from TSR Mobile

Think about the main types of questions you might be able to answer about your texts, and find quotes that back those up. Don't try to learn an essay or it'll end up flat and unconvincing. Think about the language in them and the analysis you've done on them before but remember if you think of something else that suits the question, get that in there as well!

Have you done PCQE or anything similar? This is a technique we used to make sure we were putting everything we needed to into each paragraph. It stands for Point, Context, Quotation, Explanation / Evaluation. You do a bullet point for each then pad it out in a paragraph (obviously you don't need to do that in the exam - just look it over to make sure you've got them all). I think this always helped me to change my analysis depending on the question - keep C&Q the same, adapt the others to the question.

So, most important aspects are... The overall theme/s, the development arc of a central character, & a few select quotes to back those up (especially nice if you can find one that would work for both - less learning :P) In terms of the best way to learn them, I'd write them on study cards and read them aloud regularly. Wander around the house reading them aloud. Sit in the bath reading them aloud. Take them on bus journeys and whisper them to yourself :P I still remember a huge amount of Romeo & Juliet from doing this & I'm in third year of an unrelated degree now :)

I found it harder than past papers, and it took me a lot longer to finish, but I don't know if that's just to do with exam pressure or it actually being harder. I think I was alright, there were some weird questions though. I would have liked to have seen more "Show that" questions because they always let you know if you've got it right or not - I think there was only one in section A this year.

Can you remind me on that question and what you put? I remember there were two I was stuck between, one where it went colourless in an hour and another over 3 days. I put the 3 days one just because an hour seemed too quick but im regretting it now lol

I just guessed, aha:L It was like... The methylene blue would change from blue to colourless in the presence of oxygen or something like that. I put B or C I think... The one where it would eventually go colourless so I think I got the same as you.

How did you find the exam in general? It wasn't as bad as some of the past papers I've done(or maybe I'm remembering wrong?), and the five markers were exactly what I wanted to come up. I'm aiming for an A, but I kind of want to up my 75% that I got in the prelim... aha:L
one question i was unprepared for was the changes in the asian ethnic group in the usa over the past few years and how it had improved ect. think i was able to make up enough points to get some marks for it but my fingers are crossed i can get an overall A pass for it! the selective in the use of facts question was also a little difficult to answer bbut managed to do it in the last 15mins of the exam!!
please leave your comments below, know many people wont have done it but anything you have on it would be useful! thanks :)

I did Study Theme 2 - Context B and D
Both went okay I guess, I didn't like Context B question I as felt I didn't have many specific theories or examples linking directly to the topic of bad parenting. The research method questions were actually okay for me except the last one of discussing problems faced when interviewing a criminal lawyer as I ran out of things to talk about so I just kept rambling about possible problems etc I just wish I had more to mention.

Context D was amazing as I could use tons of information from my dissertation and I really did a lot for that question. Overall the paper could have been a lot worse for me.

Unfortunately, you'll probably just have to revise your texts as best as you can on your own if your teacher wasn't very good. If it's actually the content you're worrying about, revise texts/quotes/essay plans first before going on to past papers as doing a past paper when you are unsure of the text isn't the best thing.

It's good that you're doing well in the close reading. How was your folio?

Really?! That's quite shocking to be honest, how can that not count as exceptional circumstances? I know they're cutting back on appeals this year, hopefully people like that won't suffer even more because of it.

In terms of final exams though, I like them because personally, it works for me but I understand that for many people that's not the case. The only problem I feel is that you're not tested on the whole course in many subjects, for example if Immigration had come up in modies the other day my essay would have been much worse than if say, they had asked about checks and balances.
On the other hand, I really think the english system has gone too far - I have quite a few friends down south and they basically just learn the content for one module, before instantly forgetting it for the next - at GCSE anyway there doesn't seem to be any concept of linking ideas / topics or building on your knowledge.

That got a bit long sorry! I could go on a rant about the english vs scottish school system for a long time:D

I think there ought to be a limit on how many retakes you can do, although there may already be one. For some subjects it can be slightly irritating how you have to learn all of the course content, yet are only tested on a narrow proportion of that. I think you can also get your exam paper remarked in England if you pay a certain amount of pay. On the other hand, I prefer the system here whereby we have one exam board, the SQA, whereas down south they have all sorts such as edexcel, aqa, wjec.

The thing with Glasgow is that even if they say...

The thing with Glasgow is that even if they say they require 5 highers at 1st sitting they might allow you to apply with only four.

Just email them and see what they say.

For Veterianry Medicine (That's what I am applying for) they require AAAAB at first sitting at highers + AB at Advanced Highers.
BUT after contacting them and explaining why I'm not doing 5 highers this year and that I plan to take 3AH and another higher next year, they said that If I get good results in my Advanced Highers they will consider my application.

Bearing in mind that VetMed is as competitive as Law and Medicine, I'd say thay might allow you to apply. As I said before... Email them and ask.

If they say no, you can always do what TheFOMaster said or just apply to a different uni :)

Good Luck

Those are often the hardest question in SG music. That's why I lucky I was doing Int 2 because all the SG people in my class struggle with them.
The best thing to do is just try to listen to the piece and do what you think is right. The main problem you may have, is if a change is VI to V but because you thought the first chord was V you write down the change as V to IV. Just do a lot of practise questions on websites etc. :)
I'm sorry if this hasn't really helped much, but good luck for tomorrow :)

Make sure you know your quotes, because not being able to remember the quotes can kind of throw you off in the exam and make you more worried than you have to be. And don't tell the story- the markers assume you know the book, so analyse literary techniques, character development, and always ALWAYS refer to both the question and theme in all of your paragraphs.

Is it the specific texts you're worried about? I did Merchant of Venice last year(although the analysis stuff we did in 3rd year is exceptionally different from how it's ended up now i'm in 4th year). I can only remember two of the questions to be honest as I kind of hated it(important relationship and any question to do with Shylock). Also, do the texts you feel most comfortable with in the exam. If you feel you could write a more in depth essay on your drama/prose than your poem, don't let the amount of quotes and stuff to remember get to you. Drama and prose are easier for some people as there is a substantial amount more to write about than with a poem.

Study tips:
-Do past papers especially for close reading.
-As you go through the close reading passage, mentally note the questions they may ask you.
-study cards are brilliant for remembering quotes.
-For essays, compile all the questions that are relevant to your texts into similar questions(e.g. an important incident is the same as a turning point, a sympathy question is just about the same as a character who makes you feel an emotion) and plan/write one for each group. It gives you a list of quotes and shows that usually, there is a lot of overlap. Usually, a similar pattern appears through the years, so it might turn out that you've basically already done the same essay before.

Also, how was your folio? (and did the B in the prelim include it? if you've got a secure folio it's kind of like a thing to fall back on if you're after an A and lose a few marks, although I'd be happy with a B, because a B is pretty darn good).

I haven't studied for it yet... and it's on the 17th... oops. Have you got any exams before it? (I have 2 :()

Ah thanks! The problem for me is that my teacher concentrated the majority of this year on a book called Slaughterhouse 5 which I did not understand at all so I was definitely not going to do it for the exam. Unfortunately that has meant that a lot this year in English for me has been wasted.
My folio was pretty decent according to my teacher I would get around 19/21 for each even though my discursive was just over 1200 words:S
My B in the prelim did not include the folio.
I only have one exam between now and english which is biology so I think I will be ok for time
Good Luck!!!!:)

Is anyone sitting this exam on the 4th June?
If so what are your revision techniques as when I try to do past papers I end up writing too much which leads to me becoming bored then I feel like I'm going backwards with my revision.
Also how much do you write on standard lined paper for a 6 mark and a 4 mark question?
I like to draw spider diagrams and memorise bullet points for everything they can ask you! And roughly for a 6 mark about a page and a few lines (my writings kind of big) and for a four mark roughly about 3/4 of a page :)

You need to use the information in the table re the urea in Urine and the information at part (c) as well as (c) ii)
E.g. From table In urine there is 1.75g of Urea per 100cm
From the (c) this person produces 1.2cm3 of Urine per min.
therefore
1.75g urea per 100cm
=
0.021g in 1.2cm per min (worked this out by 1.75g x 1.2cm /100)
from (c) ii) we need to work the answer out for 24hrs, so far we have per min. Therefore 0.021g x 60 (mins in an hour) x 24 (hours in a day) = 30.24g

Def not the easiest question.

I'm currently in fourth year and I was thinking;
When I will be in 6th year, that's when the year below will do the 'new highers.' So that means if I had to resit a higher subject, would I have to learn a slightly different course? And therefore, some subjects might be easier in the new courses, which means it would be easier to them in 6th year rather than next year. Does anyone know how different the courses will be?

Some courses will remain largely the same, such as Geography. However, some courses have been given a complete overhaul, such as Graphic Communication, which no longer uses the drawing boards, around 80% of the work is done on the computers modelling and the exam is purely KI. I checked this as I was planning on returning to sit these subjects in 6th Year and turns out Graphics is a lot easier without the drawing board work and not much as changed from Geography making the transition from Int 2 still easy for me!

The most obvious uncertainty would be how Hamlet...

The most obvious uncertainty would be how Hamlet is indecisive. He constantly sways between things, "to be or not to be" he's over-analytical and struggles to make his mind up. Probably the most prominent example of this would be in his reluctance to get revenge on Claudius. When the ghost asked him to avenge him, he was so determined to do so, yet when he has his opportunity to do so when Claudius is in the chapel, he holds back; so that Claudius will too end up in purgatory. Hamlet went from despising Claudius even further because he put his father in Purgatory; in the context of the play, not being able to pray before death was an even more horrifying act than the murder itself; yet Hamlet completely changes his mind and sinks to Claudius' level. You could probably touch on the topic of his madness there too. Other examples of uncertainty could be how Hamlet is usually so careful and analytical (he wants to make sure Claudius is guilty before he gets revenge; so he puts on the re-enactment) to killing without a second thought, without even checking to see how it was (Polonius). Hamlet's uncertainty really raises the topics of possible madness and the morality surrounding revenge.

Hey everyone,

What are the school results that count for entry to university by applying through the UCAS? Do results obtained from years before your last year of school count?
Because if one takes four Highers (which the entry requirement for a Bsc course) and achieves an A on every subject, then they would have 80x4=320 UCAS Tariff points. And if we look at the entry standards on this ranking (http://www.thecompleteuniversityguid...bles/rankings?) they are well above those results.

Thanks!

Most universities don't really look at UCAS points and will look at your Higher results from 5th year.

As you said AH HE is a very limited subject, yet most of the people who take it at AH or higher level have no desire to study a similar course at univeristy. The people who take Higher Home Ec or a related disclipline just took it because their 5th subject choice was full. Therefore they even agree that they selected it because it was an "easy" option.

Thanks for the link, and I'm glad that you agree that it does have some suitability, even if it's limited.

I had a bash at explaining reasons for non-preference in my last post (I also made a distinction between SQA and English qualifications - we can't immediately compare them without first showing that the curricula are similar), so I'm not going to repeat myself, but I'm going to add the reason "because they think it's soft."

Also, you totally can't extrapolate my arguing for AH HE to H. HE; that's simply not logically valid. :p
I haven't even glanced at the H. HE curriculum, so I can't comment on it.

I have recently been asked to do the Scottish Baccalaureate at school but I really don't know what to do my project on. I am studying adv. biology and adv. chem as well as geology and physics next year (I have done maths in S5). any information/ideas/thoughts would be fab!

I did the science bacc. this year on seal conservation (and got an A, yay!) but I wasn't actually that impressed with the qualification. Although it was interesting as you could choose any subject you were interested in (although it had to be sciency of course!) it was far less useful than I thought it would be.

In the end we were heavily recommended not to do anything with proper experimentation, so everyone pretty much ended up putting surveys out and emailing lots of experts. Also, the final product of your project, leaflet, talk, lesson etc. (I did a leaflet), is not sent to the SQA and is just described in your report which I thought was a bit strange. How do they know someone isn't just making stuff up?

The log writing, although boring and rather repetitive, was actually very easy and basically consisted of writing lots about boosting your confidence by phoning up experts and giving lots of reasons for all of your decisions. It sounds like I'm just slagging it off but I do feel like it was quite bigged up by the school (we had 10+ entries) and actually wasn't all I'd expected. We were all told it would help prepare us for uni style work (and maybe it did - who knows!) I think I wouldn't have missed out on much if I'd not taken it. I mean, we can all use phones and email people already and that was all the actual project was, and the log writing was very straight forward (especially with ample exemplar and a set list of grade A criteria to include).

Sorry if this sounds very anti-baccalaureate, I just thought I'd share my experience.

Oh and also it is possible to still do the interdisciplinary project and not the full bacc. if you are taking the wrong advanced highers. It is no less work though.

A teacher may be able to mark it though if you ask very nicely. A lot of my teachers have said that if we have stuff to mark we can take it in over the study leave. If not though, I'm sure that there are a lot of questions that you know are right or can check in your notes to make sure so you can roughly mark it that way, and any questions that you are not sure about ask your teacher or ask somebody on the student room perhaps(I'd be happy to help, because I think I've done a bit of the 2002 paper)?

When you watch a clip and it says list 4 improvements, then you think wtf was wrong with that just right down all of the things that you know would be for a good performance, for example in badminton, straight arm, side on to the net, poor transfer of weight, poor court movement, don't leave any space blank as I'm pretty sure their is no negative marking so you might as well fill it.
PS: I did PE last year and wrote things like that and good luck :D.

It really just depends on the school, which I think is kind of unfair but still. At my school, maths isn't compulsory but English is, but it's different for others. The maths department at mine actually advise us not to take higher maths if we think there's a chance we'll end up dropping it(and the figures are something crazy like if you get a C at int 2, there's like no percent chance of passing) so we can still have our 5 highers.
