Do your school offer any other languages? If not you could look at a college course/another school perhaps if you want to pick up another language like German or something :)

I analysed another 4-6 quotes that were part of the poem but blanked on some other stuff.

I know a girl who speaks French at home and is doing higher French. She is great at listening and speaking but she isn't as good at the reading or writing. She finds it difficult to spell words, however, I think this problem can be easily overcome and she probably doesn't put much work in.

Anyone else do French Credit Listening? Monsieur such and such was just a vague mumble, and he sounded like he was going to off himself when he was talking about how he missed his friends in France! At least the storyline was a change from "You are staying with your French penfriend Marc.."

Our prelim was really..ughh...hard xD...but our second prelim was fair, I just hope the exam tomorrow is good :/

out teacher said we could go into school whenever we wanted to do past papers on the computers. she said if she didn't see us in the 2 weeks of study leave before the exam then we'd find it very difficult :/

I know this is an old thread... anyone still about? I'm doing it and the exam is tomorrow... panicking because I've never been in class for this subject and have no clue when it comes to theory. I got full marks on the folio so I only have to get about 40-50 marks in the exam to ensure an A. Anyone know revision sites/materials for this subject?

i've grown an unhealthy obsession with tennessee williams and i know 50+ quotes for him. revision is going well but i'm not sure if i will recover from this

4 5th years last year (6th now) did 'Stealing' at Higher and got an A band 1.

See, my school have been a shambles in terms of teaching the Advanced Higher Course. We won't do a prelim, so we don't have appeal evidence, but worst, we don't know how good/bad we are at parts of the course. We have never done anything under exam conditions , so basically we could all be working at D's and still be thinking that were good enough to get an A.

That's why I am worrying so much about the exam...

Hi, i am also doing the Changeling , i find it a great text and there so much to write about for it.

What quotes are you learning for it? I find the best quotes are the ones around the turning point of the essay, such as the definition for Changeling and Toms immediate reaction to the definition because his growing love for Charlie at the time. The symbolism Quotes are also great!

I realise this question wasn't directed at me, so I hope you won't think I'm being presumptuous by interrupting. :) Following on from what skier said, the pronunciation and spelling is quite straightforward as german is a phonetic language, however, what some people find tricky is the grammar because of the cases and word order. Once you get your head round it though, it's not that bad. I think the same advice applies to learning any language, really. The more you immerse yourself in it, the easier it becomes. I have certainly found that listening to German radio, reading newspaper articles has helped a lot and makes the higher course seem so much more straightforward. I do French as well by the way, although German is my preferred language and I do better in it. It's nice to see that you are going to study languages at uni as well. I hope to study German and Russian. :)

How easy is it to get a A or a B? It's purely because I need atleast 3 B's this year for university.

I think my favourite question in that paper today was the Sweeney Todd one just because I'm obsessed with it but then I found myself having less to write about the Lady and the Tramp one.

What ways are people learning long peices of texts like drama and novels. I'm doing streetcar and gatsby and it is taking a long time to learn. Whats the most important aspects and quickest method to learn so that during the exam i can remember it. Hope this makes sense!

Thanks for the replies. No skier i mean dropping it completely. I did my standard grade in 3rd year (achieved a 1) and i'm currently doing int2. For my career path, english is not compulsory at all. I feel taking 4 highers instead of 5 will give me more leverage and less workload to handle.

Although this is the opposite to you, a girl that my teacher taught 2 years ago got 12/50 on her close reading exam and got an A because she was so good at essays and her folio was really strong! If you can get 2 15s, you can still get an A if you do well in the close reading :)

Hi there. Anyone here sit the Advanced Higher Applied Mathematics; Mechanics today. I did it and found it really difficult, especially the section B. Pretty sure I failed. If you did the exam what was your thoughts on it/predicted grade haven sat the paper?

Aww thanks :), my German teacher says I have a knack for languages. To me once you've learnt the basics and a couple of tenses it's not that hard to get going.

That's my geography teacher's view, but I don't think they would risk failing students just because of that.

I'm meant to be doing higher English next year so long as I get a credit grade. I didn't realise that the course was apparently going to change! I've heard that the compulsory list of things that must be covered has changed to include loads of Scottish related stuff. I'm gutted:(, I really wanted to read The Great Gatsby! Really?! That's quite shocking to be honest, how can that not count as exceptional circumstances? I know they're cutting back on appeals this year, hopefully people like that won't suffer even more because of it.

In terms of final exams though, I like them because personally, it works for me but I understand that for many people that's not the case. The only problem I feel is that you're not tested on the whole course in many subjects, for example if Immigration had come up in modies the other day my essay would have been much worse than if say, they had asked about checks and balances.
On the other hand, I really think the english system has gone too far - I have quite a few friends down south and they basically just learn the content for one module, before instantly forgetting it for the next - at GCSE anyway there doesn't seem to be any concept of linking ideas / topics or building on your knowledge.

That got a bit long sorry! I could go on a rant about the english vs scottish school system for a long time:D

no, the answer is correct as the amino acid will have the same base sequence as the codon because:

Codon has base sequence CCU,
Therefore anti-codon on tRNA will have base sequence GGA,
Therefore the base sequence on the amino acid will again be complementary to that, therefore being CCU!

I think what you are doing is you are taking your answer from the tRNA molecules which are anti-codons. You are asked about codons.

Am I the only person here that can sort of do the higher questions, but cant do the standard grade ones to save my life?! :o

I love the Scottish voiceover guy! haha and here's a random bit of advice for anyone, me and my friend have been only texting each other in french until the exam which is actually really helping, it's helped me get used to using the perfect/conditional tenses and improved my vocab :)

Those are often the hardest question in SG music. That's why I lucky I was doing Int 2 because all the SG people in my class struggle with them.
The best thing to do is just try to listen to the piece and do what you think is right. The main problem you may have, is if a change is VI to V but because you thought the first chord was V you write down the change as V to IV. Just do a lot of practise questions on websites etc. :)
I'm sorry if this hasn't really helped much, but good luck for tomorrow :)

I saw some one in my class that had credit maths grade from standard grade crumble under the higher course so they had to drop down to int 2 and the same with my physics class.

Make sure you know your quotes, because not being able to remember the quotes can kind of throw you off in the exam and make you more worried than you have to be. And don't tell the story- the markers assume you know the book, so analyse literary techniques, character development, and always ALWAYS refer to both the question and theme in all of your paragraphs.

Is it the specific texts you're worried about? I did Merchant of Venice last year(although the analysis stuff we did in 3rd year is exceptionally different from how it's ended up now i'm in 4th year). I can only remember two of the questions to be honest as I kind of hated it(important relationship and any question to do with Shylock). Also, do the texts you feel most comfortable with in the exam. If you feel you could write a more in depth essay on your drama/prose than your poem, don't let the amount of quotes and stuff to remember get to you. Drama and prose are easier for some people as there is a substantial amount more to write about than with a poem.

Study tips:
-Do past papers especially for close reading.
-As you go through the close reading passage, mentally note the questions they may ask you.
-study cards are brilliant for remembering quotes.
-For essays, compile all the questions that are relevant to your texts into similar questions(e.g. an important incident is the same as a turning point, a sympathy question is just about the same as a character who makes you feel an emotion) and plan/write one for each group. It gives you a list of quotes and shows that usually, there is a lot of overlap. Usually, a similar pattern appears through the years, so it might turn out that you've basically already done the same essay before.

Also, how was your folio? (and did the B in the prelim include it? if you've got a secure folio it's kind of like a thing to fall back on if you're after an A and lose a few marks, although I'd be happy with a B, because a B is pretty darn good).

No, you're not crazy! 6 highers is absolutely possible with the right attitude. I managed to get 6 As last year (one of which was out of school so with considerably less contact time with a teacher) and managed fine. If your teachers are okay with you taking 6, then I think you'll probably fine :)

Not crazy, just be organised and make sure you're factoring in time to relax too.

If so what are your revision techniques as when I try to do past papers I end up writing too much which leads to me becoming bored then I feel like I'm going backwards with my revision.

I did A LOT of past paper work with my kid, I'll be able to tell quite easily if this years general maths was significantly different from previous years.

One thing I picked up on already, she told me the simplify question had greater than or less than symbols in it. No general maths past paper has ever had that before.

When I will be in 6th year, that's when the year below will do the 'new highers.' So that means if I had to resit a higher subject, would I have to learn a slightly different course? And therefore, some subjects might be easier in the new courses, which means it would be easier to them in 6th year rather than next year. Does anyone know how different the courses will be?

What are the school results that count for entry to university by applying through the UCAS? Do results obtained from years before your last year of school count?
Because if one takes four Highers (which the entry requirement for a Bsc course) and achieves an A on every subject, then they would have 80x4=320 UCAS Tariff points. And if we look at the entry standards on this ranking (http://www.thecompleteuniversityguid...bles/rankings?) they are well above those results.

LSE is the first uni which springs to mind. You could do a quick search to see the other elite universities which do not particularly like Home economics.

As you said AH HE is a very limited subject, yet most of the people who take it at AH or higher level have no desire to study a similar course at univeristy. The people who take Higher Home Ec or a related disclipline just took it because their 5th subject choice was full. Therefore they even agree that they selected it because it was an "easy" option.

I have recently been asked to do the Scottish Baccalaureate at school but I really don't know what to do my project on. I am studying adv. biology and adv. chem as well as geology and physics next year (I have done maths in S5). any information/ideas/thoughts would be fab!
