i thought oxide had a full 8 electrons around it as it was an ion, but ddint think Ca could have been an ion too.

Well yes the oxygen does have a full outer shell when it is bonded to calcium as calcium has given both of its outer electrons to oxygen, so the most outer shell is full. Calcium is therefore an ion because it has lost two. Just remember things bond to become stable so you can decide how many electrons each atom is going to gain / lose.
