what is hybridization?

what is hybridization??
can you guys make a short sharp and simple explanation that can help me understand ( This training teacher is so rubbish)
It is the concept when you move an atomic orbital to a new hybrid orbital

Observation 1: atomic orbitals have certain shapes and orientations

Observation 2: The orbitals used to hold molecules together are not the same shape as atomic orbitals

Hypothesis: There is a process that we will call "hybridization" that involves combining atomic orbitals to make molecular orbitals used for bonding.

Now we'll think up some 'rules' for hybridization that seem to fit and apply these to the bonding in simple molecules.

If there are any anomalies then we'll make the model more sophisticated and call it molecular orbital theory ...
