Balancing chemistry equation using electrons

I've balanced most of the equation, which is:

14H+ + CrO72- + ?e- ------> 2Cr3+ + 7H2O

I thought that 3 went where I have put the question mark. But apparently it's 6. Could someone explain why please. :smile:

The charges of both sides need to balance.

Left-hand side: +14, -2 = 12
Right-hand side: +6 = 6

To make the left balance with the right you need to add 6 electrons.

12 + -6 = 6.

Now there is a charge of +6 on both sides.
