Help On Half Equations

I really dont understand half equations and I have a test tomorrow involving them. Any help on this?

So then you get things like Zn2+ + 2e- = Zn

Does being a cation or anion affect with how you form the equation ?

Cations are positively charged ions, so they will gain electrons and be reduced (like with the Zn2+). Anions are negatively charged ions, so will loose electrons to become reduced, e.g Cl- = Cl + e-
