does anyone know why NaCl and MgCl2 structure is giant ionic lattice and not metallic bonding?
by definition, a giant ionic lattice is a “regular structure, held together by ionic bonds. these ionic bonds are strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions”.
if we look at NaCl as an example, the force of attraction is between Na+ ions (cations) and Cl- ions (anions) aka oppositely charged ions. ionic bonding is between a metal (Na) and a non-metal (Cl). another reason why it can’t be metallic bonding either is due to the fact that Cl isn’t a metal.
