Tollens question

Mark scheme AQA:

Reagent to confirm the presence of ethanal:
Add Tollens’ reagent / ammoniacal silver nitrate / aqueous silver
nitrate followed by 1 drop of aqueous sodium hydroxide, then
enough aqueous ammonia to dissolve the precipitate formed

sorry if this is a dense question, but are these separate steps or part of the tollens test, ive never seen them on a markscheme before.

It's all part of the Tollens' test.
chemguide gives a decent explanation: https://www.chemguide.co.uk/organicprops/carbonyls/oxidation.html (scroll down a bit).
You then add the aldehyde (or whatever is being tested) to this solution and observe any changes

That's basically how you make Tollens' reagent. So you get a mark for saying that Tollens' reagent should be added, or that ammoniacal silver nitrate (which is technically what Tollens' reagent is - the NaOH ensures the solution stays alkaline/basic) should be added or describing all the steps to produce Tollens' reagent (which is the third point). : )
