Edexcel Economics and Business Unit 4B: The Wider Economic Environment and Business

I was just wondering how people are doing with revision for the exam (20th June) and how people are relating the pre-release material to the specification.

The sub-topics on transport and the environment- how do you link that to the broadcasting industry?!

I can link most of the pre-release to the syllabus, but it's just the stuff on the environment and transport that I don't think relates to it really :/

Evidence B and F is technological advancements and links to the changing patterns of demand, and innovation and growth section of the syllabus
...Evidence E is in a similar vein and alludes to the fragmentation of the broadcasting industry because of Sky and Virgin.

Evidence D is about the BBC's monopoly power which links to market failure and regulation because OfCom is mentioned in it

Evidence I is about externalities and whether TV is a demerit good.

The other bits of evidence I haven't a clue on! Any thoughts?!

Worst case study ever isn't it! Are you going to bother revising the environment and transport? My teacher quite confidently said she didn't think it would be brought up in the exam as the case study hardly relates to it.

I've banned myself from Skype until exams or over- had my password changed to remove temptation of distracting socialising! Would be happy to discuss the exam on this forum though.

Gerald Wood's a hero! Soo helpful

Did you mean CBA? Cost Benefit Analysis- a means of quantifying externalities
-weighing up private and external costs and benefits
-try to attach a monetary value to the externality
- consider time lag factor

CBA related to the broadcasting industry could be for and against the abolition of the licence fee.

...If you did mean CPA then I haven't a clue!

30 mark question:

Define whatever terminology is in the quesiton

1 paragraph for the question - analysing impacts it may have, backing up with evidence from the pre-release

1 paragraph for the counter argument, again analysing impacts and backing up with evidence, but then also a little extra on the end of the paragraph as to why the counter argument is not your view.

The conclusion you need to prioritise points- i.e. what argument is strongest, who will be affected (stakeholders), the opportunity cost involved and the short and long term effects of the decision.

30 mark is a tricky one!

Broadcasting industry is a mix of them all-

Public good because it's non excludable and non rivalous (but you could argue it IS excludable as the BBC can scramble signals)

Merit good
because the BBC's educational element benefits society generate positive externalities
Demerit good (think Evidence I) due to the social costs involved in children watching sex and violence (seeing as the Watershed is undermined by VOD) and the obesity connotations with TV

Hope that's of some help

Hi, I don't have anything to contribute to this thread. So apologies in advance if you find this comment annoying. I have just started this course. I am in year 12 but my sixth-form requires the students to return after the AS level exams to continue with their subjects. Slightly annyoing, but it's six weeks of important studying..Anyway, I was wondering whether I should consider continuing with this subject at A2? I have to carry on with all of my four subjects until my results are avaliable.

Are the units 3 and 4 interesting?

Thanks to anyone who replies

I did International Business for Unit 3 and this module Wider Economics Environment it;s interesting at A2 much more in-depth compared to AS where you just need to master knowledge and application, In A2 you need to be able to provide a concise and thorough conclusion and evaluation to score top marks and a lot of it isn't about just "learning the topics" you need to practice past papers. Get your teacher to help you.
It's worth taking it to A2 it depends what you want to do at uni ofcourse and your AS grade if you enjoyed the 1st year you'll enjoy the 2nd year.
