titration of copper ions

In the textbook I can't figure out why nitric acid is used in this titration and why sodium carbonate is added?
nitric acid is used to help form the solution of copper ions when your source of copper is placed into the solvent. sodium carbonate neutralises the excess nitric acid in the solution.

The carbonate ions will also precipitate the Cu2+(aq) as CuCO3(s).
