I labelled the parts of the lungs (trachea, bronchi etc), then for inspiration I wrote: external intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract, diaphragm flattens, thoracic cavity increases in volume, the pressure decreases to below atmospheric and so air is forced in. It’s an active process requiring energy.

Then for expiration: passive process. Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax (diaphragm moves back up into that curved shape), the volume of the thoracic cavity decreases again (so the pressure increases), and that forces the air out:smile:
