During crystallisation, the volume of the solution decreases as some of the solvent starts to evaporate. Can the volume of a solution decease when some of the solvent starts to form crystals?

I don't know what chemicals you're talking about, but I'd guess that since the solid will probably have a very similar density to the liquid it will affect the volume negligibly.
