How hard were the first few questions on the AQA 2023 as paper 1 for chemistry? And what were they about or based around?

You should know that the AQA 2023 paper is locked and so asking any questions around it is against the TSR Community Guidelines.

May I inquire the reason for your interest in this paper?

Sorry, I was not aware this was against the guidelines, I just wanted to know how hard the paper was so I could get an idea around how hard other papers are going to be

That's okay.

Have a look at the overall grade boundaries. It can be assumed that the AQA AS papers this year have been slightly easier than previous years as the grade boundary for a top grade was higher.

2023 - A = ~ 75%

2022 - A = ~ 69%

2019 - A = ~ 70%

Here is a breakdown of the grade boundary for a top grade for the 2023 paper. The difference in difficulty of each paper was almost negligible.

2023
Paper 1 - A = ~ 76%
Paper 2 - A = 75%

Does that help?

Also, out of curiosity, are you preparing for mocks or AS exams?

Yes that does help , but how come the grade boundaries fluctuate each year? Are there certain difficult topics that appear in the paper that cause the grade boundaries to be higher or is it purely based on the performance of students

That’s exactly it. The performance is affected by how well prepared the cohort is as a whole and how difficult the papers are. From the information given by @5hyl33n, it can be deduced that the 2023 papers were probably easier than the papers from previous years.
