measuring electrode potentials

when measuring the potential difference between two half cells, why is it important that the two solutions remain separate?
how does this have affect the results if they mix?

I know it sounds like a stupid answer but if they mix how will the standard hydrogen electrode be able to measure between them. Especially if one solution dissolves with the other.

Well how would you connect the salt bridge and wire which are electron carriers and ion carriers? there wouldnt be a redox reaction if they couldn't be transferred
