Year abroad for languages students

It says in the prospectus that French students spend a year in France for a certain amount of time depending on the course, but is it possible to spend time in another French speaking country (not France)?

I know of someone who went to a French-Canada this year. I don't think you're obligated to go to France, just somewhere French speaking, safe to travel to and somewhere you can study or teach. I know the Spanish students have the option of Spain or Latin America.

I know at least if you do an English Teaching Assistantship (and probably same applies for a work placement) you can go anywhere the British Council/University deems safe.
