Length of problem questions

What is the ideal length of problem questions in exams? Are they supposed to be shorter than essay questions? Is 3/4 pages writing enough in exams to answer a problem question?

Please help thank you

I think basically they should be as long as they need to answer the question (without waffle) in as much as time as you have. So practise beforehand, how much can you write in 45 mins/1 hour etc? One of my lecturers said that last year the highest mark he gave for a question was only 2 sides of a4! So its quality not quantity I guess.

Hope that helps
I ask this because essays can/ideally/should be at least 6 pages long whilst problem questions are mostly 3 pages? Seems kind of odd students don't attempt problem questions more although problem questions require far more emphasis on detail and right to the point

I much prefer problem questions, because usually everything is contained in the question as long as you know the law, and even if you don't you can often jumble stuff together

I don't like essays in exams because they seem to ask for so much more.
