The first step to being a writer is having something important you want to say and you want everyone to hear. All great works of art are basically about an idea. The plot/story/characters/imagery are merely the way of helping people understand how big and powerful and important this idea is.
So many writers don't seem to know this. They just write a story for no real purpose and then wonder why people don't "get it". Its because there is nothing to get.
