Section 20 Offences Against the Person Act circumstance HELP

S is walking home when C runs towards her waving a knife. S screams. G, a passer-by, runs to help S. C lunges wildly at G with the knife and slashes G's hand, causing severe bleeding.

Would this have the specifc intent required for Section 18 Wounding/GBH with intent of the Offences Against the Person Act or would it be downclassed to Section 20 because of the lack of mens rea?

Given that the first part would be considerd assault on S through the Criminal Justice Act 1988 Section 39.

Thanks!
