what is being oxidised in this equation? thanx

2011 3c extra.PNG
the question states that the above reaction is oxidation of the nitrite ion

Attachment not found

however i thought the nitrite and nitrate ions have the same oxidation number of -1

i see that the oxidation number of the nitrogen has changed from +3 to +5

i thought oxidation is an increase in oxidation number so how can it be the nitrite ion that is being oxidised? is it not just the nitrogen atom?

thnku in advance for any help :smile:

It's the N that is oxidised

NO2- + H2O --> NO3- + 2H+ + 2e
