Percentage by mass (redox titrations)

When asked to find the percentage by mass you do moles x molar mass to get the mass and then divide this mass by the overall mass then times by 100

But
When I times moles by molar mass how do I know what molar mass to use I.e do I just use the molar mass of the transition metal or molar mass of the whole compound how do I know which
I think you would use the molar mass of the transition metal, providing that is the element you're trying to find the percentage by mass of. I assume you've been given the number of moles of this metal that are present in the compound.
