Co-ordinate Geometry

The question is:

Points A and B have co-ordinates (1,5) and (-2,y) respectively.
(i) Find an expression for the gradient of the straight line joining A and B.

Point C has co-ordinates (2,-3)
The angle ABC is 90 degres
(ii) Find the possible values of y

I know the working out of both parts of the question but i don't understand why you have to use:
Gradient * Perpendicular Gradient = -1 to find the values of y.
Can someone explain this?

You don't. It's the simplest method. You can use pythagoras, and that works too.
Both give rise to the equation y22y3=0y^2-2y-3=0
