What I've been doing this week - 26/03/17

This week I have had quite a few days off due to illness - I have also had no power at home as there is a snapped power cable outside the house and apparently this isn't an easy fix! The couple of days I have been at work have been quite busy; next week I have a networking event designed to help young professionals meet, something I am very much looking forward to, as it can be somewhat isolating leaving university and no longer being surrounded by your university friends constantly.

Varsity was this week at university, which unfortunately I could not attend, but it looked to be loads of fun, and everyone I know that attended had an incredibly good time, and even better - MIDDLESEX WON!!!

Any questions about university life, economics, or anything else, post on here and I shall reply as soon as possible!

Firstly, losing that hours' sleep last Sunday really knocked the life out of me! I never anticipated feeling so shattered all week because of a single hour change, but it really has made a difference! It has also meant that it is now dark again when I wake up which is miserable - it is so much easier to wake up to sunshine than darkness I find.

Work has been hectic, with lots of things going on in the next few weeks. I went to a young professionals networking event after work one evening this week, and it is a situation I have always felt rather uncomfortable in - walking into an event at which you know nobody and having to strike up a conversation. I think now I am attending these kind of events more regularly, I really wish I had made more of an effort at university to improve my networking skills, and get used to making conversation with new people.

University has now broken up for the Easter break, however this time last year was not a break at all - all students are given a substantial amount of work to complete over the break, whether that be revision for exams in May, coursework deadlines, or seminar work to ensure a thorough understanding of all work done so far in the academic year. If I had any advice, it really would be to make sure you plan your work out, and spread it across the entire break - so many people, including myself, leave it all until basically the weekend before you're due to go back and it just creates an unnecessary amount of stress and problems.

If you have any questions about university, economics, or graduate life, just post on this thread and I shall get back to you as soon as possible. Also, if there is anything specifically you want me to post about, let me know as it is sometimes difficult knowing what to post, as I do not want to bore you with menial details about things you have no interest in!

What I've been doing this week - 09/04/17

This week I travelled to our regional head office in Birmingham for a course about the banking systems we use in branch. It was a two day course, all computer based and was very heavy going! The best bit of going to these courses aside from the learning, is meeting individuals from everywhere across the bank; it enables you to build up a network and make friendships from a variety of different roles within the bank, and people with a lot of different backgrounds.

As I was out of the office for two days, work was relatively easy this week as I was not around to do much. I usually find it harder to be motivated and concentrate when I am in that kind of position however, as I find myself looking for things to do; these are usually the tasks that have been left until last because of either how boring they are, or how time consuming they are!

This time last year I was back home for the Easter break, and I must admit I took this week off to have a rest, and spend some quality time with friends and family before the hard work really started in the lead up to deadlines and exams. In hindsight, I will I had done some work in this week as a break in routine makes it hard to get back into working.

Anything you would like to ask, post in the thread and I shall get back to you.

I have been in the office all week this week (apart from Good Friday!) which was a nice contrast after last week, however it does mean that I am inside all day, every day which can be somewhat annoying when the weather is as nice as it has been! The long weekend means I get a rare chance to go away for the weekend, so I am going on a rural retreat for some much needed time away from computers, phones, laptops and any other form of technology we seem to be constantly on! The best thing about working is that it means I can afford to make the most of my time away from it; something I definitely much prefer compared to University life where at times it seems to be impossible to get away from work.

Since starting work I have really began to appreciate how nice it is to put your phone away for a couple of hours, get some peace and quiet, not jump straight on the laptop to watch Netflix in the evening - I think any more time spent on a computer than that I do at work would give me square eyes!

This week, everyone I know at University still is starting to feel the pressure and stress levels begin to rise; this is due to impending deadlines and exams, but the work put in now is definitely worth it at the end!

If you have any questions, drop me a message or post on here and I shall reply as soon as possible.

This week I passed my 6 month probation! This means that I am now well on my way to kickstarting my banking career and cannot wait to see where things go. I have just set up a new business with my long-term boyfriend which consists of informational websites; we are still in the early stages and there is a lot of work to be done, but it looks to be a very promising business venture, and will hopefully prove to make a nice side income!

It is always good to jump straight into things, and if you have a business or entrepreneurial idea to just go with it; I appreciate there may be financial restrictions, so one has to be realistic, however there is always a way to at least start on your idea. Never let the fear of somebody telling you your idea is ridiculous, or time constraints get in your way - I currently wake up at 5am, work out, drive to work, get home from work about 7pm, and crack on with more work whether that be banking exam work, course ambassador work, or working on this new business venture. If you have the passion to succeed and make money, you will.

I spoke to a few of you on the phone this week which was nice, however if you think of any more questions that weren't covered on the phone, just post on here or drop me a message and I shall get back to you same day where possible.

This week has felt very long - probably due to the number of bank holidays recently, making 5 full days of work seem noticeably longer than recent weeks. Next week is looking to be manic with the summer networking events starting; these always prove to be interesting and fun, but it means that some work days could be in excess of 12 hours' which considering the 1.5 hour commute each way, it means I have no time to myself!

All my friends at university have been handing their dissertations in this week or next, making it an incredibly exciting time for 3rd years! After the dissertation hand in, there are usually only a couple of exams in the next month or so getting in the way of graduation in June! It is so important to stay focused, and these last few weeks tend to be the hardest to retain concentration due to how hard everyone has been working the past couple of months.

If you have any questions, just post on here and I shall try to get back to you same day.

This week has been rather busy - it is always tough trying to fit 5 days' worth of work into 4 days, and everyone seems to send emails over bank holiday weekends!!! I assume this is because they finally have time to catch up on things, but it means a Tuesday morning following a long weekend is always hectic.

This week I have attended a networking afternoon tea which was fantastic; I am always far happier when I am out and about, talking to people and socialising. It is quite easy to get stir crazy when you are stuck in an office every day, making any external event a welcome break from desk work.

This time last year, all my coursework was now submitted, and I was beginning to revise hard for my imminent exams, something I have always struggled with as I seem to be unable to sit and concentrate on something for a prolonged period of time, thus why I dislike sitting at my desk all day sometimes!

I had also started applying for graduate jobs by now, an infuriating process, that takes as long as any uni work I have ever done due to the tests and essays employers seem to require now!

If you have any questions about applying for jobs, or economics, post in this thread and I shall get back to you.

I attended a Brexit seminar this week, held by a professor specialising in economics, and the global economy. Brexit seems to be a very divisive subject and is incredibly difficult to predict any future impacts. The majority of the talk covered the potential outcomes both positive and negative, however there was an overwhelming sense of it will be what we make of it.

Other than the Brexit event, the week has been rather quiet as there is a lot of paper and desk based work to be completed, not my favourite situation to be in, however one is never going to be happy with the work they have to do 100% of the time, and the main thing is that I am still learning how to complete new tasks.

All my friends that are still at university are starting their exams this week, meaning stress levels are rather high; at this time of year it is vital to maintain a calm approach and not panic, however I appreciate that is far easier said than done!

As always, if you have any questions at all, please post on this thread and I shall reply as quickly as possible.

Hi, thanks for posting all these, they're really great. Economics isnt one of the degrees you hear most people talking about so its good to hear someone talking about their experience. I'm hoping to study Economics BSc in Sept 2018. I really liked the modules covered at Middlesex, and was impressed by the faculty I met at the open day.
Whats Middlesex like location wise? I've been to the campus but am worried it seems too cut off from london. I know its only a short trip on the Northern line but I don't want to feel like I'm going to university in a town and commuting to a city; I want to go to university in a city. How did it feel to you?

Hi. Ive got offers from middlesex university to study either BSc or BA Economics but would really love if you could give me a insight as what to expect in terms of maths.. I’ve only done it at GCSE where I achieved an A. Advice would be appreciated
Hi AliceI am very interested in studying economics in Middlesex university but due to my personal life situations at the moments i need to postpone it for a couple of years. I have decided to self-study the same books which an economics student does during their university educations. Can you give me the list of books that you studied in year one?

Hello, Irazabay Atamusa
Thank you for your question, my name is Rebecca I am a course ambassador at Middlesex University. unfortunately, Alice was only active 4 years ago and is no longer with Middlesex University. I would recommend contacting one of our student ambassadors who study on a similar course here https://www.mdx.ac.uk/student-life/chat-with-students
Whilst there is no publicly available reading list I am sure someone will be able to provide you with some useful resources.

I would also recommend contacting the admissions team as soon as possible if you have not already done so to ensure your deferred entry is confirmed. You can find the admissions team's contact details here under prospective students from the UK

If you have any more questions feel free to message me here.
