i think you'd have to use the lewis structure to show them (ie. show the H's), unless they were a derivative of something (like benzene) in which case you would you'd draw them as a line coming out of the ring like so:

I've got some basic A Level revision type nomenculture I'm doing and I'm asked to give the skeletal formula of methane and ethane amongst others.
