It doesn't need to be particularly effective, as the Haber process is cyclical and under the conditions used the equiibrium is attained rapidly enough.
I can't believe that it gets poisoned more easily than platinum. However, ALL heterogeneous catalysts lose some activity as other compounds adsorb onto the surface.
Industry is not daft, if it was no good (the best/cheapest) it would not be used.
