PERSONAL STATEMENT

Ready to write your personal statement?

It's a big part of your application, and it may seem a little daunting... but rest assured, we have some tips for you!

The personal statement is a chance for the Admissions Tutors to see if you are right for the course, so...

1) Plan what you want to say. Give each paragraph a theme and then bullet point some ideas underneath.

2) Show passion for the course you're applying for! This is what the Admissions Tutors want to see! :yeah:

3) Sell yourself! What academic strengths do you have? What motivates you and motivates you to study the course you've chosen? What have you achieved (you can mention things that aren't academic, as if you have received awards for things then it shows you're dedicated to hard work, no matter the subject/activity)?
*Mention what you have achieved - then explain how this benefited you - then explain how this will help you on your course.

3) Mention any work you do, voluntary work you've been involved in or any schemes (such as Duke of Edinburgh).

4) Proofread! This is so important! Keep reading through your PS. Then, get others to read it; they may find mistakes that you have missed. Spelling, punctuation, grammar!

Remember, show your passion!

We are here to help, so please ask us questions. :h:

OUR STUDENTS' ADVICE

Lots of students considering coming to uni seek the advice or like to hear from current students, and really there's no better way to understand the application process than from someone who has actually been through it!

Our blog page has loads of stories from our students, and we have one page dedicated to applying to uni. It's definitely worth a look - http://www.mylifewithplym.com/

From 'picking the right course' to 'visits' to 'international student applications'... it's all there!

If questions pop into your head, then please ask!
THE RIGHT COURSE

Make sure you pick a subject that you are :suith:passionate:suith: about!

That might sound obvious, but your degree can have a big influence on your career for years to come. You'll likely work harder and enjoy your work if you've chosen a subject area that you love. :yeah:

Firstly, check what careers are open to you with the subject you want to study.

Does the course have the practical work you are looking for? :yep: Practical work counts for a lot when heading into the working world, so try to find a course that suits your needs with regard to practical work, field trips and placements.

Have you already decided on the course but have particular interest in certain modules? If so, have you checked what modules are covered on each of the courses you have applied to? Do they match a particular career interest you have?

Remember, it's your life and you are the one spending 3+ years studying the course of your choice... so don't choose a course simply because someone else tells you to.

Any questions about any of the courses we offer, just ask! We're here to help you choose the right course. :h:

Hi all,

I’m Yasmin, a current postgrad student studying for my Masters of Research in Marine Biology.

If you’re interested in applying to the University of Plymouth to study a Masters you may have already noticed that unlike undergraduate applications, you apply directly through the university website. If you need any help or advice with this then I’ll be here to answer any queries.

I will also be here to chat about my experiences as I came back to studying after having some time out working a salary job… The transition was a challenge but I am so happy I made the decision. I can also give advice about using your work experience (even if unrelated to your course) in your postgraduate application.

Take care ,

Hiya everyone! :h:

As I've heard many of you are starting to write/submitting your UCAS applications, I thought I'd share my top tips for making your applications the best they can be and authentic to you!

- Make sure your personality shows through in your personal statement and shows your interests and passions for what you'd like to study!

Whoever might be reading your statement and application would love to hear about why you're interested in the course you're applying for and how you personally have a passion for that subject and learn who you are as a person!

- Show off those extracurricular activities and extra skills!

Making sure you include information about your relevant activities, volunteering, additional courses outside of your current studies helps the universities to learn more about what you're doing to go the extra mile and stand out from other applicants

- Check it once, twice, three times, and again, and with anyone else that can read your application for you!

It's never ever a bad idea to check your application again and again....! Doing so will help catch any spelling/grammatical errors, ensure it flows well, and catch anything you might want to add/remove! Even better if you can get a few people to look it over too and give you both some positive and constructive feedback on your personal statement to help you make the best application you can... After all, you want to make it count!

Best of luck with your applications! As always, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out and I'll do my best to answer any you might have! Hope to see you in Plymouth in 2024

I'd love to hear what your top tips were for making your application for anyone that's still yet to apply!

For anyone that still hasn't submitted their UCAS application yet... What would you like to know about submitting your application? I'd be more than happy to share my tips and tricks for making the best application you possibly can!

Hello to everyone considering Plymouth for their 2024 uni applications! :h:

I'm an undergraduate student here at Plymouth so I thought I'd share my top tips for deciding on your firm university for your application when you receive offers!

1) Make sure you've visited the universities you're considering for your firm choice! This means attending any open days or offer holder days the university is holding to ensure you can make the most informed decision possible and make sure the university is right for you!

If you're considering Plymouth, why not visit us on our next open day on November 18th?! You can book on here!

We will also be holding offer holder days in the near future for anyone with an offer to study so keep an eye out for these as they provide a great insight into more specifics of the courses and get more of a flavour for what life is like at the uni!

2) Be sure to chat to students and staff to learn more about the course and get honest opinions about life at university! We have a Unibuddy page here at Plymouth that you can visit here to speak to students and lecturers from your course and ask specific questions you might have about anything course-related or about the university/city in general!

3) Check out both the uni campus and the surrounding city/location to ensure it's right for you! I'd definitely recommend looking around the local shops, restaurants, cafés, entertainment venues and more in the local area to ensure there is everything you need for student life at that university! Don't forget to look into the facilities on campus too, including looking at the library, study spaces, student union and teaching spaces to get more of a feel of what it could be like studying at the university!

Here at Plymouth, we have everything you could need for student life in Britain's Ocean City, with nature right on your doorstep, as well as so many shops, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues just minutes walking from campus!

We also have the UPSU which puts on some great events for students all throughout the year as well as being a great venue to study, relax, and socialise! Check them out here!

If you have any questions about Plymouth, university, student life, or anything at all, please let me know and I'd be happy to answer any you might have!

We hope to see you soon here in Plymouth, whether that's at an open/offer holder day or maybe even to study with us soon! :h:
