Nobody wants to live in North East England?

The North East* is the only region of Britain whose population is actually shrinking and house prices falling. With high levels of unemployment deprivation post industrial wasteland and a feeling of isolation from the rest of England it’s no wonder young people grow up and leave the region as there is no future in the NE. As for Newcastle the regions capital the university is the only thing keeping it going.

As a result it’s the only part of Britain where houses actually decrease in value and despite the very cheap prices as little as £20K for a terraced house, mortgage lenders are becoming reluctant to give mortgages for NE houses knowing their devaluation. Homes are cheap but nobody wants them. With very low demand it can take years to sell a house and get out of the region. People feel trapped so don’t buy in the first place. The whole thing is a negative multiplier people leave, houses lose value there’s nothing to invest hard earned money in.

In as little as 10 years whole towns could become ghost towns the older population has gone their houses derelict the only time ones left are the very poor and unemployed which makes the area even less desirable and poverty increases crime and urban blight.

What can be done? There’s nothing to attract people back, they’ve moved to more prosperous areas like Manchester, the Midlands London and the South where they have a future and more opportunities. With shortage of land in Britain a whole region is gradually being abandoned.

*North East in this case is defined as the area north of Darlington to the Scottish border and east of Cumbria.
