It was because there were two type of way you seen the colour, blue and black or white and gold. Originally the dress was blue and black but the way the photo was taken with the flashlight is created an effect which led to people seeing it in two type of colours. It was pretty interesting as everyone's brain used a different side to see the dress and colour so it became an argument.,
cause it was fun, and you could make small talk about it without hurting anyone's feelings. very few people were deeply invested in their interpretation of it.
