They've subbed the output of g (linear) info f (quadratic), then found the minimum of the quadratic. They could have completed the square of fg(x) as an alternative/used the expression which gives the min value of y.

Note as a shortcut, you could have simply wrote down the min of f(), which is a fair bit simpler but very question specific.
