x3=x13\sqrt[3]{x} = x^{\frac{1}{3}}, by definition.

Actually, the sanity check makes sense too. What is cube root of x? it means we want to find something that, when we multiply itself 3 times, the result is x. The definition is thus "verified" by index laws.
