How come this isn't written as 2,2-dimethyl-4-chlorobutanal

is it because the chloro part counts as a branch so it's in alphabetical order u write it?

c comes before m in the alphabet, so when ordering the groups, you list ‘chloro-‘ before ‘methyl-‘. The naming conventions state that groups are ordered alphabetically in a systematic name.
