Hey!
I'm Lara, I'm applying for classics at UCL, KCL, Royal Holloway and Reading! Reading is the one of the best unis in the country with classics and museum studies and although I'm a London girl, I would also love a campus with green spaces. Im currently studying classics, history and drama predicted A*AA. I play lacrosse and i love debating and musical theatre!

Hi @Lara_Karbritz,

We're so happy to hear that you're applying to Reading! You're so right, the green spaces on the campus are lovely (I like to go for walks around the lake).
If you have any questions about Reading or the application process, please do let us know!

Hi! I’ve applied for consumer behaviour and marketing with a placement year at Reading. My other choices are Hull, Essex, Southampton and Staffordshire. I love Reading’s campus and the town itself, I’m from a pretty underwhelming area so seeing it all in person was quite a shock lol! I’m an bit anxious with it being so far from home but I have friends in the area so I think I’ll be fine.
I’m currently predicted an A* in photography and a D*D in graphic design.
Hi, I've applied for Modern Languages, and very grateful to have already received an offer! Although I have never been to Reading, I've heard very positive things the university! My only question is what things there are to do in the city, ie museums, theatre, etc? I was also wondering if anyone knows how easy it is to get a part time job whilst at Reading?

Hey @tatobon26,
So great to hear you love the look of Reading! I also am a fair bit away from home - it can be an adjustment at first, but you'll get used to it and there's plenty of time to visit home as well as loads of things to get involved in to make you feel more at home here! If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to ask

Hey @Anonymous,
Congratulations on receiving an offer! In terms of things to do here, there's two shopping centres in the town centre, a museum, a cinema and a theatre, seasonal events like winter wonderland and the circus, loads of shops and restaurants, clubs and bars and a bowling alley and a few other things close by you can get to by bus or train!

Jobs are fairly easy to come by too- the uni have plenty on offer in their bars and dining schemes or more centrally as a student ambassador, or you could get one in retail/sales in the surrounding area or town centre. You can find out all about what we have on offer in terms of jobs here and a bit more about activities and things to do here

I'd encourage you to come to Reading and have a look around if and when you can, we have Open Days in June and Visit Days for our applicants around February, but if those don't work for you the campus is always open so you can come up and have a look around whenever! We run campus tours every Thursday or alternatively you can opt for a virtual tour whenever.

If you have any other questions or want any more advice please let us know!

Hypothetically speaking, if I get an offer at Reading and I firm my place with a course that reduces the offer, what happens if I have also completed an epq and I get a high grade in it (again for a course that considers an epq) is that a reduction by one or two grades?

Hi Anonymous

Great question!
I think for the best thing to do to get the best clarification on this is to contact the admissions department - I don’t want to give you any false information.

You can contact them on +44 (0) 118 378 8372 or email [email protected] and they will be able to advise you on the most up to date information on admission criteria.

Hope this helps, but if you have any other questions about a course or Reading, please let us know and we’ll do our best to help.

Good luck!

Hi everyone

We thought we'd kick things off with a new thread for people applying or thinking of applying for 2024 entry! Here, you can meet other applicants, chat during the whole application process, and ask our lovely reps any questions you may have.

Icebreaker questions

What course are you applying for/thinking of applying for?
What universities are you thinking of applying to?
Why Reading?
What are you currently studying and what are your predicted grades?
What extracurriculars are you involved with?
(Share as much detail as you're comfortable with!)

i’ve applied and received a contextual offer for geography and economics does the firm choice scheme apply to me?

Hi. I want to apply to a course that is AAB entry. However, my predicted grades are ABB. I have got an epq at A however this is exempt from the course entry requirements. Do you think I should still apply and have a chance?

Hi @Wasiur115,
May I ask what course it is that you're interested in? I think it sounds like you have a strong application - here at Reading we look at our applications from a more holistic perspective (i.e. looking at your personal statement and extracurriculars too), and often give out contextual offers so you definitely have potential, but it depends on the course you're applying to! I think your best course of action is to contact our admissions team to talk to them about it in more detail and get more specific advice - you can contact them via email at [email protected] or via telephone at +44 (0) 118 378 8372 and if you let me know your course I can give you some advice tailored to that!

Hi everyone,
Im Charlotte, I’m going to apply for primary teaching with English (QTS). At the minute im still weighing up other unis, but im planning on Cardiff Met, York St John, UWE, BCU, then I’ve got one spare space haha. Im wanting to apply to Reading as its the only uni with a primary teaching course that specialises in English, and I’ve always found reading and writing super interesting, so I really want to have a focus in it. I also absolutely love the campus (teaching is on a smaller, old fashioned campus which is beaut), and the unis focus on sustainability. Im currently studying English Language, History and Drama and im predicted ABB. At the moment I’m cutting down on extra curriculars, since I did far too many in year 12 😂. I’ve volunteered at a Brownies unit for a few years, helped with my schools musical, taught year 9 drama classes, taken part in debate soc and my schools like school council (it’s got a diff name). In terms of hobbies I like reading, knitting, sewing and watching musicals/ plays. A fun fact about me is that I’ve got pet rats, they’re my favourite animals ever.

Hello all,

I'm applying for Biomedical Science at Reading with the Foundation year, being my main choice. My back-up choice is Portsmouth. I'm thinking of Reading Uni as the course I'm hoping to get into is accredited and that the campus is lovely. I'd love to move away from home so it's ideal too. I've already finished my A-levels this year but I'm taking a gap out just to earn a bit more money and self study to prepare myself. I didn't take any sciences during A-level (Media, Photography, Business) and I got a BBC and realised I wasn't passionate in what I was studying, I only chose the subjects my parents wanted me to choose.

I was wondering if there was any students who previously took the foundation year and progressed into the degree that I could talk to. I'd love to know about how the found the course and how many students were under the foundation year. When I went to the open day, I didn't see much information on the foundation year. I know that I'm a student that'll get considered last in comparison to other as I lack the experience and A-levels and I'm JUST about pushing it as the typical requirement is BBB for students with no science A-levels, I know Reading has the firm choice scheme but that doesn't guarantee a space .. I'm super worried about my personal statement because I'm trying to get my application in by the end of this week and I'm getting no help from my previous college either T_T

Hey @b1illylambe

Firstly, congratulations on your offer -that's fantastic news!
Unfortunately, if you already have a contextual offer, you won't be eligible for the firm choice grade drop as well I'm afraid, as this only applies to people with a standard offer. You can find out more information about what happens to offers in various different circumstances here.
If you have any other questions about this though and your offer specifically, please do get in touch using the Ask A Question function and the team will be able to assist you further.

Hope this is helpful and good luck with the rest of your application process!

Hey @Wasiur115 !

That all sounds like great experience!
I would suggest still applying personally, as Reading do try to look at applications on an indiviudal, case-by-case basis, aiming to consider the person as a whole rather than just their grades, including relevant experiences, however, I would also suggest having a back up plan i.e. looking at other options of universities or courses that reflect your current grades,as I cannot confirm 100 percent what would be the outcome of this situation. Another thing I would suggest would be to contact our admissions department if you have any queries regarding your eligibility, as they will be the best people to assist you with the most up to date information. You can call them on +44 (0) 118 378 8372 or email [email protected].

Hope this is helpful but if you have any other questions about Reading or the course, please do let us know!

Good luck!!

Skye 🙂
