Complex ion chemistry help?

Hi,

Can you please tell me if dilute hydroxide ions act as a base or as a ligand when, for example:

[Cr(H2O)6]3+ + 3OH- ------> [Cr(H2O)3(OH)3] + 3H2O

Can you also explain why? Thanks! :smile:
Sorry you've not had any responses about this. :frown: Are you sure you've posted in the right place? :smile: Here's a link to our subject forum which should help get you more responses if you post there. :redface:

You can also find the Exam Thread list for A-levels here and GCSE here. :dumbells:

Just quoting in Puddles the Monkey so she can move the thread if needed :h:

base, because the chromium is already six coordinate. The hydroxide ions in solution simply abstract protons from the attached water ligands, which have a weakened O-H bond due to the high charge density of the 3+ metal ion.
