why does the number of nucleons equal the mass of an element which is also 1 mole?

The mass number (M) is the same as the total number of nucelons. mol=massMmol×M=mass\mathrm{mol=\frac{mass}{M} \Rightarrow mol \times M =mass} so when there is one mol, the M is the mass.

12g of C-12 contains 1 mol of atoms, meaning a mole of a nucleon will have a mass of 1g as it is 1/12 of the mass of C-12
