Fabian Society, help :(

hey,
I'm a bit confused >.<

did the fabian society want to abolish capitalism through parliamentary means?

OR did they want to humanise it.. so nationalise major industries, and have an extensive welfare state?

and then, there's eduard bernstein.
he basically criticised marx's critique of capitalism. So this means socialists were no longer opposed to capitalism, and just wanted to reform?

urgh

:frown:
They wanted to create a more socially conscious society through parliamentary, not revolutionary, means; I don't believe that thought within the group has ever been unanimous, but there was a general consensus that capitalism should be tempered, e.g. internationalism, nationalisation, social justice. The very name of the society expresses this as it was named after the Roman general Quintus Fabius Maximus, known as Cunctator (the Delayer), as he famously used tactics of attrition and wearing down the enemy, rather than full-on combat, to success. It's interesting that it took Tony Blair, hardly a socialist, to introduce the minimum wage, advocated by them as early as 1906.

You're best off reading a good book about their history (or Labour history generally) though, I'm sure there are a few out there. Unless, that is, you need specific info fast for an essay or somesuch.
