Hii

Wow, that sounds really cool. What sort of work did you do out there?

That sounds really interesting  i've got an unconditional offer for Biomedicine.

I'll be doing the three year full time course too and from what i've heard it is mainly mature students, as its designed for those who work during the day, but want to further themselves still. I think there will be a huge range from about 19 upwards, so I wouldn't worry

Congrats on the offer! - I also have an unconditional! Like I said the age of people doesn't bother me though I do wonder like whether most mature working students would be doing the part time evenings course. Which makes me think what ages people on my full time course would be!

Thanks, you too

Well even our full time course will be run in the evening, so we will still have those that work during the day.

I don't think there are many Birkbeck students here on TSR. Perhaps because they work, they don't have the time lol

So what made you choose Birkbeck then?

I hear that the 2013/14 cohort was the first time Birkbeck had a larger cohort of younger students than mature students.
Hey,

I'm 19 , I'll be attending an interview for Diploma in Law at Birkbeck on Wednesday next week! I hope to study here (cost permitting. I hope to move out but the cost seems high so may move elsewhere)

I know of another person who wants to go there who is around my age and she's going for Psychology

There are a lot more younger students becoming interested in Birkbeck. I like this, there should be a nice spread of ages and backgrounds, but Birkbeck should be careful not to become like the others and lose it's roots and why it became the top

Yo guys and gals,

I'm a 3rd year Politics, Philosophy and History student at Birkbeck. A few pros, cons and general observations for you...

Definitely a great place to study - don't be put off by the idea of mature students studying with you. They can often add quite a bit to your seminars and lectures and give you angles and perspectives you might never have considered, given their life experiences.

As it's an evening university, you've got to make the effort to socialise after your first few lectures. Make sure you get a group of people going to the bar, The George, on your course which is a nice place to socialise and relax and meet other students. UCL, SOAS and ULU are also nearby so you could always wonder into their bars, too. If you go straight home at 8 or 9pm then there won't be too much of a social life for you at Birkbeck.

Birkbeck are pushing for my youngsters to attend straight out of college so there isn't any reason to feel out of sorts, either. However, I'm 21 and came after a gap year, but have stopped thinking about the age of anyone I approach/approaches me or talks with me after lectures and seminars. It just becomes irrelevant and if you click with a person over similar ideas then you can consider them a friend etc. So I've got friends and acquaintances aged from 19 to their 60s. Embrace it.

One thing for certain is, you'll leave Birkbeck with a University of London degree, so don't feel that their degree would be any less sought after.

Erm, there are other things I could say but I want to sleep now... but don't feel afraid to ask.

Maybe see some of you around one day..../evening.

Hey

Yeah I recently heard that. I think thats great though. I think one of the best things about Birkbeck is its diversity of age groups.

Have you applied?

It's great that you come across people of all different ages and backgrounds. Only in our Further and Higher Education systems will you find this

Lulz. My advice might turn into some kind of autobiographical account but if you have some questions of your own then ask away.

I have no specific questions but what can I expect as a new student

Not for the LLB as I was working and studying the full time degree. I graduated from Birkbeck a few months ago.

Hi All!

May I know how diverse Birkbeck is? The tuition fee for international students is really expensive so I'm still doing my research if it's worth it or not. I plan to take an MS degree in Earth Science.

Hey, not started yet but it seems pretty diverse. Loads of different people

As for fees ~ HE in the UK is very expensive across the board

I'm glad to hear that there are different people in Birkbeck. But yes, one of the reasons why I'm still not sure of pursuing a degree here is because of the fees... very expensive indeed. By any chance, is it possible to get a job in London if a student gained her undergrad qualifications and work experience outside UK? I'm from the Philippines. Can Birkbeck help in assisting international students to look for a part time job?

Subject to restrictions by immigration yes. I think you can't work more than a set amount of hours per week as a foreign student.
Birkbeck should be able to help, if not then there should be some central advisory service within the University of London, which Birkbeck is part of.

London , in theory, has many jobs here, I won't lie the country has a jobs crisis and high unemployment and competition for jobs, but nevertheless as long as you stand out in application and interview and in your case have a sufficient standard of English and correct immigration status you should be fine.

Don't let fees put you off getting the best education you can get. If you can afford it then go to Birkbeck

Thank you so much for the advice!

I've read from earlier posts that Birkbeck doesn't provide accommodations. I know they have the University of London Halls of Residence for international students but I think there's no guarantee each international student can be accommodated. May I know if there's anyone here who are staying there and what is the environment? I'm also curious how much will it cost. Are there other places you can also recommend?

Thank you!

Yes, it's very diverse. In my seminar classes more than 60% were foreign students from Russia, US, Australia, Greece, Cyprus, Africa, Middle East. All over really..
