M1 - Newton's Laws

I know it's a really simple question, but my textbook has no answers at the back and my teacher is marking my exercise book, so I have no way of seeing if I do it correctly or not. :s-smilie:

I have a rough idea of how to go about doing this, but I don't want to do it wrong. What should I do?

What is your rough idea?

What is your rough idea?

- mgN = 9.8mN

- F=ma -> m=F/a

Then after that I'm a bit lost.

F=ma

What is the overall F acting downwards
Reply 4
What forces are acting? So this will allow you to calculate 'F'.

What is acceleration?

Now put it all together.

You're nearly there... Keep at it!
What is the sum of your total forces?
look at the overall situation and apply F = ma to it.
Here's another hint if you really need it.

I tried:

- 10 - 9.8= 0.2

- 0.2/5 = 0.04

That doesn't seem right.

overall downward force = mg-10

That is your F in F=ma
Reply 8
and they've given you a, now plug it all it :smile:

:confused:
mg-10=ma

you know that a=5 and you know that g=9.8

mg-10=ma

you know that a=5 and you know that g=9.8

So 9.8m - 10 = 5m?

So 9.8m - 10 = 5m?

Bingo.

Bingo.

So 9.8/5m - 10/5 = 5/5m

1.96m - 2 = m?

So I got:

mg-10=ma

9.8m-10=5m

9.8m-5m=10

4.8m=10

m=2.08

Is that right?
